I’m a current first year student at UVa. Due to a number of different factors (including the fact that if I stay here, I will go into 60K of debt just after undergrad- I’m out of state), I am probably transferring to my state university for next year. I will probably either study engineering, math, or accounting. It’s not that I don’t like UVa, it’s just that being at my state university makes a lot more sense in a lot of ways for me. Do you think it is worth it to go into such debt just for a degree from UVa?

no (10 chrs)

hazelorb, can you expand a little bit? what does 10 chrs mean?

UVA has a good alumni network so you can prolly get a good job to pay that debt really fast if you play your cards right…its definitely worth it and 60k isnt THAT much =P

You have to have 10 characters (letters/numbers) in your response in order for it to be posted, so people answer briefly, then say 10 char to get the required 10 characters in their answer.

I wouldn’t go into massive debt anywhere. Just my opinion. I think that UVA is on your transcript for all potential employers to see, along with good grades, indicates that your transfer has everything to do with costs and nothing to do with your ability. Best of both worlds, you get the credit for having gotten in and attending a top-20 college like UVA for a year with the cost savings of a less-expensive college.

Not worth it

Have you tried to get aid from the school? ANd isn’t UVA cheap compared to private schools?

Unfortunately, due to my family’s financial situation (we are upper-middle class, and wouldn’t qualify for any financial aid besides government loans), UVa is still very expensive if you are out of state. Yes, UVa is typically 5-10K less than private schools, but then again, for me, Rutgers is 20K less than UVa =)

jdavid…a very mature question from you and shows your responsibilities. Also in the same boat (middle-income family), which means the EFC figures that we should be able to fork out $50K every year based on gross income of $148K.

D has worked her tail off all through school and been accepted at Villanova, American, Boston College (rejected at UVA), and now I’m faced with having to have the talk with her that I don’t see how we can foot that kind of bill for 4 years.

Is it worth all that debt? Very hard to say yes.

I’m of the same opinion as Hazel.

If you go the accounting route, you probably will want to work for a big firm out of college. The local offices of the big firms do their own hiring and most of their new hires will come out of their respective state schools.

No need to spend big bucks for out of state tuition.

Engineering is not one of UVA’s known strengths, compared to many other large publics, which might play into your decision about whether to transfer.

You have to give serious thought to how much you’d like Rutgers, because you are talking about a straight-up comparison of two schools, not starting over with UVA vs. Rutgers vs. Penn State or Maryland or Princeton or whatever. Do you like Rutgers, its campus, etc?

Thank you everyone for your valuable input! I’ve finally decided that I am transferring to Rutgers University next year. Although it will be very sad for me to be leaving UVa, I feel that Rutgers is the best option for me at this point in my life.

For all the students out there, good luck with the rest of the year!
