Hello college-confidential world! I’m currently a junior in high school and I’m kinda freaking out a little early about college applications. Before I really get into it, I want to major in Film/TV Production. My dream schools are 1.) University of Southern California, 2.) New York University, 3.) Chapman University, 4.) University of California Los Angeles, 5.) Emerson College. Anyways, my junior schedule is US Government, Orchestra A, TV Productions, (Lunch), US Literature, AP Spanish Language, Honors Pre Calculus, Honors Chemistry. Compared to schedule of a ton of students I know who have gotten into USC/NYU, mine isn’t too rigorous. The thing is, most of my classes are incredibly time-consuming. All in all, I really want to have time to focus on my films. I feel as though I haven’t had any time any more to think of new ideas or work on new projects. I have had some great success recently in my film career though. For example, I went to a 4-week intensive last summer in Los Angeles working on the backlots of Universal Studios. 2 of my films got accepted into the International Student Film Festival Hollywood. There were 75 films screened at the festival overall and only 2 other filmmakers had 2 films accepted. One of my films won the Best High School Experimental Award. This has gotten me featured on the front page of a local newspapers, and my cities most well-known’s newspaper’s website, on my school’s website, recognition at the Board of Education meeting for my school along with the Mayor granting me a certain day in my town named after my honor. Later in the year, I will be volunteering at a major film festival for my city and will help select films for it. In the new few weeks, I will find out if I my shorts got accepted into a whole round of other festivals. I’m also trying to find a summer internship for a big film company and if not, I will do a film internship through this major hospital where I live. In addition, I just found out that I have been accepted into the National Young Arts Foundation, which only has a 6% acceptance rate. Through this, I am going to NYC for a week long intensive in March for film. Unfortunately, my chem teacher doesn’t really recommend this and after my parents spoke with my teacher, she said that she doesn’t really think I should be taking the class if I want to focus more on my film career. This leaves me at a really tough place b/c I’m considering dropping Honors Chem for my 2nd semester, but I don’t want it to look like I have an easy schedule b/c then I’d just have 1 AP and 1 honors class. I want to be able to focus on my film career as much as possible, but I don’t want that to risk my chances of acceptance. USC is honestly my absolute dream school and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. I don’t want to screw up my chances, but I also want to be able to focus on my films. Please let me know what you think, thank you!
