Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

There’s still a glimmer of hope for us old, ugly guys! Sundance looked like a combination of Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) and Duck Commander Phil Robertson. I didn’t think he had much of a shot early in the season, when all you could see was the brim of his cowboy hat and braided beard.

Until next season. Blake will bring all his Voice victory trophies to the Blinds. Adam will be out for revenge. And Christina returns.

I read this morning that it’s Gwen who is returning, not Christina, to replace Miley. Was that article wrong?

I thought it was Gwen in the promotional ad last night. Think you are likely right, @alwaysmom.

Just finished the finale. That was the most truly wonderful and touching ending yet.

The Kelly and Billy duet was outstanding.

BTW, I think that Sundance is actually a good-looking guy, under the hat, the beard, and some excess poundage. I think he should aim at something closer to a stocky/teddy bear size, for his own benefit. I love his personality and sense of humor and I’m happy to look at him and hear him right now. He’s the genuine article.

Everybody is very talented, including some who were eliminated in the late rounds. This season didn’t have as many people who I felt were ‘compelling’ to me.

Oops… GWEN, yes!!! The other blonde. Sorry

So who chose Sundance, or thought Sundance could win it, right from the start?

(not me)

I actually put Sundance on my team at his blind audition. I was most impressed by the extra bit he sang to Alicia. Then I dropped him to make room for someone else–can’t recall who, but I was trying for balance–then I put him back 50 days ago.

I had no idea that he was on American Idol. (I’ve probably seen it a total of four times over the years.)

I loved The Sing-Off, and am a huge fan of Pentatonix.

BTW, is anyone besides me a big fan of the lead guitar player in the Voice band? He is incredible!

Like Consolation, added him during his Blind, then took him off, but then 44 days ago (to be exact), added him back on when I didn’t have a country artist on my team.

If I initially thought he could have won it, I would never have removed him in the first place.

I, too, loved the Sing-Off. I think it was on for four seasons and also had a couple of specials. Pentatonix has been successful, mostly through their use of social media. They had very little outside professional help even after winning Season 3 of the Sing-Off. They are an interesting group and really only all got together very shortly, a day or two, prior to auditioning for the show. Scott previously was a member of the SoCal VoCals, a popular a cappella group from USC, who also appeared on the Sing-Off. The a cappella world is a relatively small one!

When Sundance was on AI, he didn’t make it to the final 12. I believe he was eliminated the week before that. From what I recall, he didn’t sing country songs on Idol.

Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch sang together in HS. Avi and Kevin were added just before The Sing-Off audition.

A match made in heaven.

The Sing Off aired last year. Home Free was the winner and they are doing very well. If you haven’t heard them, you should find them on YouTube.

I don’t think I have ever missed a single episode of AI, and I don’t remember Sundance. Not surprising, though, since I don’t even remember yesterday.

Recently enjoyed watching their documentary on Netflix, Pentatonix: On My Way Home.

@Consolation . Yes, I should have been more clear. I knew that the three of them started together in high school and the others were added much later. They work so well together. It truly is a match made in heaven, or in southern California.

My favorite part of the finale was Billy and Kelly’s duet singing It’s Quiet Uptown. It’s such a beautiful, haunting song and such a very sad part of the show. They did an excellent job in that performance.

Re: AI and Broadway- Constantine did live theater (he was in Chicago when I happened to be there and saw him on the street) and Fantasia Barrino was in “after Midnight” on Broadway in 2013. Katherine McPhee has been in several TV shows (she is in one now). We all know what Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkston, Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood have done. Jordin has faded, but has been in commercials.

BTW, is anyone besides me a big fan of the lead guitar player in the Voice band? He is incredible!

Yes, my H is a huge fan!

Constantine did theatre long before he appeared on Idol. He studied theatre at BoCo. Fantasia was also in The Color Purple on Broadway a few years after Idol, then After Midnight several years later for three months. Justin Guarini is currently in In Transit, his fifth Broadway show over ~13 years, usually for a few months at a time. Other Idol alumni who have appeared in theatre are : LaToya London, Ruben Studdard, Tamyra Gray, Frenchie Davis (long before her time on Idol, and subsequently The Voice), Anthony Federov, Diana DeGarmo and her husband Ace Young, to name a few.

And don’t forget Jennifer Hudson!

No one has forgotten Jennifer, @kelsmom . I mentioned her in post #4918.

Josh Kaufman, one of my favorite winners of The Voice, subsequently appeared in Pippin on Broadway.

Here is one of my favorite performances by Josh:

The live version was even better, IMHO, but it seems to have disappeared.
