Further to AI and Broadway: Fantasia also took over the lead in the original production of The Color Purple–after never having even attended a Broadway show before. I saw her in it, and it remains the most stunning performance I’ve ever seen on a stage, both acting and singing. She embodied Celie from the top of her head to the tips of her toes, as if the role were invented for her.
Diana DeGarmo, who was runner-up to Fantasia during her season, played Penny Pingleton in Hairspray on Broadway for a while, and was, unexpectedly to me, very funny in the role. She’s also done a lot of touring and regional theater,
Constantine had a lead (not sure if it was “the” lead) in Rock of Ages and did some other stage work–I didn’t see any of it.
Voice winner Josh Kaufman took over the lead in Pippin for a while.
So some alums of the shows have had what passes for a musical theater career; for others it was a single stunt-casting kind of thing.

Mea culpa, @alwaysamom. Between the time I drafted my comment and the time I hit the button to post it, life intervened, as it often does, and I was called away from the computer for a few hours, leaving the page up and my post in midstream. So the intervening posts that made mine somewhat repetitious didn’t show and I didn’t pick up on them. Can’t imagine why it would be worth anyone’s time to call me on it. We’re not exactly writing the definitive history of television singing competitions here.
