Is "The Voice" Your New Vice?

Nobody is watching the Voice?

Those last two singers on Christina’s team were terrific.

I thought Mathew had the best shot until
Jacquie hit the stage.

For some reason I also like Johnny Gray.

^I was wondering the same thing, dstark. Not one comment on Monday night’s show… yet? For me, Monday’s show seemed to lack any standouts. Even the judges seemed to sugar coat their critiques, more than usual, at this stage of the season.

Cole and Jacquie are my favorites. It will be interesting to see who gets the most iTunes downloads in the coming weeks.

I am watching, but not trying to get too attached to any one singer yet as they sometimes disappear on me. I agree Christina’s last two were outstanding. Johnny is a cutie, but I’m not sure he has the chops to show more variety for this show. I also love the lady from Jamaica. But really, except for a very few, there are so many to like.

Besides the last young woman on Christina’s team, who was amazing, I also liked a few other younger females. I think part of me is cheering for my daughter, and the other part of me wants them to succeed and continue to grow. I was bummed for the song that Grey sang, as it just seemed so not her at all, but then again I think she was trying to snap out of her wedding singer mode. The other guy I am rooting for is the computer guy who left Carnegie Mellon. With some development, which this show allows, he could be very interesting.

James Wolpert, the Carnegie Mellon geek, is number 4 on the Itunes charts.

When the teams were formed last week, I thought CeeLo’s was the strongest, but after last night, I think the teams are pretty even. The singers are all so different that it is hard to judge them against each other. I like the geek, Jacqui, Caroline, Will, Nic (he’s entertaining!) and several of the others whose names I can’t quite remember yet.

I like Johnny Gray, too, and for some reason he reminds me of Davy Jones of the Monkees. Sometimes, if I close my eyes, it ALMOST sounds like he’s singing with a British accent. LOL

Grownups who let kids sing songs like that should be punished.

I guess James Wolpert is safe. He is up to number 3 on the itunes charts.

Yep, perhaps, they should be forced to enter their kids in the screamfest competitions held in the US. You know the ones that have titles such as The Voice or X-Factor. :)

All in favor of banning xiggi from this thread, say aye.

Aye.

No…

I don’t like kids doing that singing either. They should do age appropriate songs that won’t ruin their voices. Singing “opera” or Metallica can do equal harm.

Aye. Haha! Thanks for the attention, Toledo.

By the way, I know that such a point has been made before by the people who are involved in singing. It makes sense to me that straining the vocal cords might be bad for young children. I believe that similar arguments have been made about many sports, including gymnastics and contact sports.

Fwiw, I believe that the greatest danger is when parents are pushing kids way beyond the natural. In this case, during the interview, the little girl said that she has never taken classes and just started singing by ear. I just thought she was very good and seemed to enjoy her time on the scene.

As last comment, I make no apologies to “diss” the competitors who only seem able to scream at the top of their lungs. But that is because I do not really care for that style. Obviously, since this is all subjective, others might disagree.

Jacquie might try Cry Baby, Lie to Me or Give Me One Reason.

Have to add that there is nothing natural about the sound she is producing. She is mimicking operatic style without any way of knowing how to do it the proper way. It takes years to develop proper breath support so that she is not simply pushing air through her vocal cords with no control. In order to produce that sound with no damage, she must learn how to use her jaw, tongue and neck without tension. Simply pushing out the sound irritates the cords and irritated cords produce mucus, lesions and polyps. She absolutely needs voice lessons in order to protect her voice. No reputable voice teacher, however, would ever allow her to sing that way. That is where the desire for fame, money, whatever, conflicts with good sense. If parents don’t have sense enough to not allow it, then others will just take advantage.

xiggi is OUR “X-Factor”! Oh and by the way, Kat didn’t do her famous kick or lay-back spread eagle last night!! I’m sure you took note of that, “x”:)

Honestly, if my kid sang like that Holland girl at the same age, who I think was 9, I am not sure I would have known at that time as a non-musician that it was not healthy for her vocal chords. I have only learned about polyps and voice strain since my own daughter starting voice lessons at 14 (whoa, 8 years ago, time flies).

If her parents are opera singers, then I agree, shame on them, but otherwise, I hope she and her parents get good education and support for that young voice.

Back to TheVoice and Xiggi … No one should be banned, we need the Simons and the Paula’s here to keep the balance. Not all contestants are worthy of making it big, and even the best pick icky songs occasionally, so it is our job on this forum to set the world straight and point out what we see. No opinion is a bad opinion, but we may not always agree.

Actually, I did notice. Did she not sound great and look lovely last night? This said, I thought Adam seem to miss the antics. The way the show has worked in the past years, doing the opposite of what Adam is suggesting seems to be the ticket to success. :)

The young Dutch girl seemed to be forcing the notes, and I also would be worried about her vocal cords. I’ve also got to wonder whether she understands the song – Dear Papa, I love this boy so much that if my love for him is in vain I’d want to die. Bad enough angst from a teenager, but from an 8-year-old?

There are a few singers I actively dislike, notably Shelby Z, Olivia, and Grey. There are a lot who are good. I particularly liked Will Champlin and Jon (James?) Wolpert. It was amazing to hear someone singing A Case of You, and “making it his own,” as they love to say. Along those lines, although she isn’t a favorite of mine, the woman who sang I Will Survive did an amazing job of reviving that song. I liked her version a lot more than Gloria Gaynor’s. (I groaned when I heard she was going to do it, but was pleasantly surprised.) Georgia on My Mind was awesome also.
