Is there a prettier song?

Yes, LasMa and I mentioned Eva Cassidy’s songs back on posts 41 and 49. She became famous after her death, sadly. Another songstress I loved who sadly died before her time was Laura Nyro . These are some pretty songs [Laura Nyro - It’s gonna take a miracle 1971 - YouTube](<a href=“Laura Nyro - It's gonna take a miracle 1971 - YouTube”>Laura Nyro - It's gonna take a miracle 1971 - YouTube) <a href=“Laura Nyro - He's a Runner (Jan. 15, 1969) - YouTube”>Laura Nyro - He's a Runner (Jan. 15, 1969) - YouTube;

Many of hers songs have been redone by others (stoned soul picnic, wedding bell blues, eli’s coming, and when I die, up on the roof etc)

** edit I listened to her soulful music all through college and grad school. Wow that takes me back…

I like the Notorious B.I.G., too! This is a lovely tribute to him by his old friend that I am sure you know. I actually think there is some great hiphop/rap, much to my son’s dismay.

jym626-
I do have a Laura Nyro CD, which I love. Very talented; I didn’t know that she had died.

Yes, she died of cancer back in 1997. I have every one of her albums (on vinyl) including those released on the verve label (should anyone be a collector). I heard her in concert once or twice. What a voice. I would have loved to have heard Eva cassidy in concert. She was a major talent too. Cancer struck her early as well. So sad.

Listen to this- so haunting… [url=<a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube]Laura Nyro, “Up on the Roof” - YouTube/url

wrldtravlr, I think every Eva Cassidy fan had that moment of “Who is this lady, and why have I never heard of her?” One reason she remained obscure while she lived was that the music industry didn’t how to package her. Was she blues? R&B? Jazz? Folk? Gospel? Traditional? She refused to be categorized, and she was ambivalent about the fame which producers believed was coming. Her death means that all we have of her is those under-produced early recordings, simple, pure, so that her heavenly voice shines through.

ETA – Take a listen to her Danny Boy <a href=“- YouTube”>- YouTube; . Unreal.

We are fortunate to have these gorgeous recordings of these spectacular voices

(OK I’m now officially obsessed with this thread.)

Another brilliant voice lost too soon – Marc Connors of the amazing acappella/percussion group (original 4) The Nylons:

Someone asked if instrumental music belonged here… Why not? Check out Paul Mauriat Orchestra on YouTube:

“Pink Moon” by the late Nick Drake:

It’s so hauntingly beautiful that Volkwagen made part of it into an acclaimed TV commercial some years ago:

I am SO happy to see the Eva Cassidy love here! I first heard about her through a WaPo columnist, unfortunately as she was fighting her battle with cancer. Somewhere over the Rinbow gets me every time. I have several of her CDs. She and Mary Chapin Carpenter (another favorite) are both from this area.

I got kd lang’s Recollections last year and it’s wonderful. What an incredible instrument she has been blessed with. Still have an old album around here, too.

I really like U2’s gospel version of Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For. It has a totally different perspective and i like it much better than the original. It’s on the Rattle & Hum CD.

My ipod playlist has a good number of your songs on them. I think I will be adding more!

ladysmith black mombazo:

love their harmonies and rhythms
so earnest and genuine- catches me up every time

My kids already know I want this performed at my funeral:

Because there can’t be any place on earth more beautiful…

Eva Cassidy, Shirley Horn, Marvin Gaye. There’s something in the water here in DC…

No Sara McLachlan?

I’m a sucker for acoustic folky stuff…Cindy Kallet, almost anything of hers…
Also …for sad/lovely…The Boy and the Violin by Buskin and Bateau

(anyone in the Boston area in the late '70’s/early 80’s and into the “cofeehouse” scene will know these artists!)

I was listening to this song by Adele, Someone Like You, and I don’t know if anyone has a more amazing voice than her.

[Adele - Someone Like You (Live in Her Home) - YouTube](<a href=“Adele - Someone Like You (Live in Her Home) - YouTube”>Adele - Someone Like You (Live in Her Home) - YouTube)

Wow! That’s a really beautiful song by Adele, and the video is nice.

Amy Winehouse did.

I enjoy listening to Adele but she always sounds like a version of Amy Winehouse to me.

“Back to Black” - one of the best albums ever.

^^^ I’m hoping there is Winehouse stuff in the vault. Check out the duet with Tony Bennett on his CD.

Love this thread! So much great music so little time! A few songs that move me to tears…

Joni Mitchell did a rerecording of Both Sides Now while in her fifties. It is one of the most beautiful arrangements and recordings I have ever heard. To hear her sing her own words written many years earlier, is hauntingly beautiful. I heard it on the soundtrack to Love Actually which I purchased jut for that song.

Another Joni favorite is River…also love James Taylor’s recording of it on his Christmas album.

And a recent favorite is a trio of young tenors from Italy named Il Volo. I am in love with every song on their debut CD, especially Smile and O Sole Mio.
