I’m simply bewildered that the site admins aren’t rushing out a formatting fix. Or perhaps they are stuck with this platform and the vendor doesn’t provide another type (hard to believe as I’ve never seen another forum with this design). Either way, the ship is sinking and the captain doesn’t seem to care.
Those statistics are damning, if accurate. There has been increasing competition from a certain subreddit in recent years, and lots of teens now regard CC as a “toxic” forum for parental bragging … I wonder if this year they’ve all just decided to go to the subreddit instead?
@chzbrgr CC is also not the place to give studnets unrealistic expectations about their chances at elite schools. We also remind them of affordability. Maybe the subreddit will help them feed their fantasies.
It is still the font for me. Too light and too big. Not pleasant to read.
It’s still gawd awful.
I’ve read the last two pages of this thread and it’s straining my eyes. Not even going to bother scrolling any further.
@romanigypsyeyes, Big congrats to you and Mr. Romani!!!
Eh, I’m sure that’s part of it. But I have noticed that this site can be pretty unwelcoming (student jumps in with specific question, everyone else jumps down their throat with unrelated questions about finance). But there also are a lot of parents here who brag about their kids, and people who mistakenly think they are experts.
Anyway, all that’s pretty by the by. I’m not happy about reddit eating the internet, and the death of small independent sites like this one. One of the last few big forum remnants of the late 90s/early 2000s internet. Until recently it even had an old-fashioned but actually usable design! Just speculating about what might be happening.
It is sad to see the decline. The web version is easier than mobile but the percentage of people using a desktop is declining. The mobile version of this site is frustrating to use and way too much scrolling. My use as fallen way off to only times when I am killing time and decide to pop in. I used to check daily…sad.
So there was a survey for the kids only about the CC site? No parents? That tells you right there that CC was not interested in our opinions – they really want this to be a site for the kids. Until, that is, their whiz-bang relaunch was NOT accepted by the kids. They aren’t coming to CC much anymore, either.
I disagree about this site being unfriendly to kids, though. Kids come on with their college fantasies and unrealistic expectations. It often comes down to money, so what is wrong with asking the kids how they plan to pay for college? Apparently this gets some of those high school noses out of joint, so they go to reddit and whine? I hope they are happy with the college application fantasyland there. All the fun of the early months will dissipate once the decisions come in AND then they find out that they aren’t getting enough finaid.
I still say too little too late for the changes that CC is making.
@momofthreeboys I use the web version on desktop and it is a big step down from the old version.
@CCadmin_Sorin is this true?
@CTTC where did you hear this?
I’d thought I’d read it in either this thread or the current CC relaunch thread (or the closed one before that). Maybe I’m mistaken. Hard to believe that none of the participants were consulted in any way before the big changes, though, isn’t it?
Unless I’m mistaken, none of the participants were surveyed. Even the moderators say they didn’t know what the changes were going to be until they happened.
@CCadmin_Sorin is this correct.
I have to say, the changes that the PTB have made have been very welcome, and helpful since this format change. I don’t find it difficult to navigate, but I do hate the font.
Even with the problems, I think we need to be careful not to spread misinformation.
Not to be an apologist for the site, since that’s not my intent, And, I hate to be that person, but I’m gonna be in this case: Source please or it does not exist, Until then, this claim under fake news. Not that I read every single post on this site, but I did not read that, have never heard of that, and certainly was not surveyed.
OOOh… conspiracy theories. Might make CC more interesting
Reading on the phone is very difficult and posting is almost impossible. And all the scrolling… and having to hunt an d peck to find the last post in a thread before hitting the. nest “latest posts”… sigh…
I’m very new to this site, and so have a “new member” perspective. In my opinion, this site is not at all welcoming to kids. Maybe it once was, but not in 2019. It offers a parent’s perspective of college and college admissions, not a teenager’s.
I spend some time on another site where the respondents are primarily teenagers themselves, and I often shake my head at some of the advice some (not all, but some) of these teens give one another. Talk about the blind leading the blind. ![]()
To some teenagers who come to CC their perspective is that if they have tip top stats they have a “great chance” of being admitted to Harvard, Yale, Stanford etc. Then there are the “Chance me, I’ll chance you back” threads which are the blind leading the blinf. And as for finances they feel they will somehow find the money or that a degree in the humanities from a top 25 college will mean that they will be able to afford to pay off $80,000 plus in student loans.
And its not just students. Many parents who come here are very naive about the whole process.
As I’ve posted earlier, reddit may reinforce their misconceptions and fantasies but that will only postpone the uncomfortable news.
The font and double space make it too slow to read with too much scrolling.
The fixes are good.
I can’t help but remember how the “chance me threads” were so hopping just 2 years ago it was impossible to keep up.niw, the “latest theads” page changes very slowly - sometimes one day to th next the same threads remain whereas even six months ago new treads appeared and a full page would love in 5-10mn.
What happened?
Is Google no longer referencing the site?
Too many ads kiling the golden goose?
I cant believe the hundreds and hundreds of anxious “chance me, I promise it’s the last time I ask but please I’m so nervous” posters have all become reasonable and cool with any college they get into.
All I’ll say is that it’s never going to be cool enough in Texas to wear my cool cc pullover!
Yes. For a long time, network searches have returned lots of hits complaining about CC being toxic. That comes with the territory of being large and popular where anyone can ask questions and provide input.
But for all its criticism, CC provided lots of value from a huge diverse population of skilled contributors. Unfortunately, the ill-fated site redesign comes at a time when CC could least afford the impact.
I hope CC returns to the valuable site it once was.
What are the signs to indicate that is happening?
