It's a curse being an international student

Hey !!! i am sure lots of ppl feel the same way… theres no scholarships for us… no opportunities…anywhere… no one wants to hire us … and on top of all this we pay F***in 100 times more tuiton than other students…

Wow … how fair is this… ???/

yeah! you are absolutely right! no scholarships at all!
and we do pay more: here (Egypt) my parents pay 20,000 Egyptian pounds a year for it. But I think it’s because of lousy exchange rates. after all the Egy. pound has been in rut for decades now.

by the way; where r u from?

there are a lot of opportunities for international students…a lot of the private colleges and universities want international students to diversify their school…they have funds for need based aid and scholarships fro international students. u have to be able to do a little research and find out which schools are like that. ask me and i can give u a good list of colleges that are willing to offer aid to international students. In the US especially, there are a lot of options for international students. i went to HS in the US and I am going to college there as well. I got a good aid package from my college.

Really? Where is that?

Its true that we pay much more than the US students, and it seems unfair at first. But when you really look into it, we (the international students) are going into their country and receiving a sound education. We are taking advantage of one of the most important resources of the country. Why would the US give away something as precious as education at dog-cheap prices, unless it was to benefit their own? This is why the colleges are more willing to give financial aid and low prices to nationals, and in state students.

We can look at it this way, we are making an investment to receive a renoun US education.

i second ordi on this one. would you rather spend on ur own son or your neighbor’s? :P

In addition, do not forget that ALL State Us are tax payer subsidized. The fees reflect the true cost. Even out-of-state students may much more than in-state students.

Even most private universities are subsidized through their non-profit status.

that’s true…the private colleges and uni get most of their funding for financial aid from the US government. they can only use their personal endowments to support international students. i agree with odi…the us students or their parents pay taxes…cheaper tuition is a benefit they get from paying all those taxes.

tell me something everyone… why cant we get merit based scholarships… i have a 3.9 and i still cant get a single penny of schol. money… i think that really isnt fair… no matter what …
i understand this is not my country… and i havent paid taxes here… but i am here to live and serve this country… in the future… isnt this in their interest… so many immigrants have made this place what it is today…
by the way moinsyed can u give me that list of colleges … that do give aid to internationals with decent academics… I am not the one with a 1600 on my SAT. I am in college … and i have a 3.9 though

Hm… But I pay taxes here… so that doesn’t necessarily work out that way.

but the fees are toooooooooo much! I agree with the fact that it’s a good education that we can’t find anywhere else; but it’s way toooooo much money.

if u pay taxes then u have to be on some resident visa…that qualifies u as a resident of the US…i think u should get ur status cleared with the proper officials instead of being in limbo. paying taxes without any benefits…i pretty sure that things don’t work that way.
osu: dickinson college, allegheny college, clark university, bates college, connecticut college, union college, washington and lee, depaw university,

very true. and we cant even get many merit based scholarships because if there are 9 us citizens and 1 int’l vying for 5 scholarships (and all have the same gpa), chances are they’ll pick 5 out of the 9 citizens for it :(.

AND if we want to work, we have to file like 3 inches of paperwork, that takes 2 months to go through, just to work for 6.00$ an hour.

no it doesn’t. you need to check your facts.
