In my public high school of approx 500-600 freshmen, we have started student class council elections. The positions available are President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. (They wouldn’t start elections until spring sem because we’d be all too shy, lol)

Being good at math and spending money wisely, I took a shot at being Treasurer. There’s a list of all the candidates and most of the popular kids (all of them are female Indians or white girls in my culturally diverse school) are taking shots at Pres, VP, and Sec.

The thing is, though, there is ONE popular Indian girl aiming for Treasurer. She and I are the only ones running for that position.

Another thing: My French teacher and my classmates in the class encouraged me to run for treasurer because of the…

Last thing: I’m known by a BUNCH of people because I’m the only freshman in the district in AP Calculus BC. I don’t know why, but some of the Asians in my school (I’m Asian too), are somewhat jealous. And the girl is EXTREMELY popular. Ehhh…

So. Any tips for victory? I don’t think I should use that last thing, eh?

Calc BC - Freshman…lol

It was a bit of a popularity contest in my school. Just a bit. Filling the cabinet with jocks was perfectly okay with the administration :-/

I’m just putting this out there, but what does “Indian” have anything to do with the girl you’re running against? Is it supposed to make her sound bad? Sorry I’m asking, it’s just that I’m Indian lol.

But you definitely have a chance
AP Calc BC as a freshman?! That’s amazing, you were meant for this position
If your school can’t see that intelligence, don’t worry because the colleges you apply to definitely will!

Don’t say in your speech: “I know I’m not popular, but…” or talk about how people always vote for who they personally like, etc. It’s so clich

^^ Treasurer is about “balancing a checkbook” for all intents and purposes, no integrals are necessary… So the Calc BC is a bit of a moot point since all it takes do the functions of treasurer is to be organized and have a half decent calculator.

That being said popular girls tend to be bad with money and worse at math (from my experience) so you could try to use that to your advantage…

Was a complete popularity contest at my school, which I don’t mind at all. I would much rather someone with a set of social skills hold a public office than someone who is purely academically gifted.

The only two contestants for Treasurer last year were cheerleaders. The most popular one won.

^^ I guess that’s a good point. They’re the ones that actually need it on their college apps anyway.

Nothing against Indians, drexeler. A couple of my best friends are Indian. Just wanted to point out that in my school, Indians want to hold a leadership position in EVERYTHING. XD

Be really short and to the point. If you don’t think you’re popular, you’re probably not going to hold their attention very long (at least where I go, you have about 15 seconds to sell yourself before the majority stops listening).

An aside coming from someone who’s won and lost my share of elections. Don’t be discouraged by the fact that she’s more popular, I’ve done that and won. You have a chance, so don’t let that be your reason not to run. Also don’t be discouraged if you don’t win. It’s really out of your control. You might be the better candidate, but most kids are too shallow to vote for the person who can do the best job, they vote for who they like.

Voting for someone popular isn’t always automatically “shallow”. Perhaps said candidate is more personable, has more charisma, is more involved in all aspects of the school. I would take those qualities over number of APs taken for a public office any day.

What I’m saying is they just vote for the person they like more without considering who has all the attributes that will make them a good class officer.

I wouldn’t vote for the kid with the most AP’s either. There are a bunch of kids at the top of the class that I would never want planning my homecoming and prom. But I also wouldn’t vote for a kid just because I like them either. There are also kids (many of whom did get elected) that I like but don’t think they were the best candidates for the job.

lol fireflake
I’m not really competitive at all. Actually, I don’t even care what people in my school do. High school isn’t nearly as important to me as college will be.

But best of luck on the election! The popular person doesn’t always win. You’re smart and well known so you have just as good a shot as her :)

My daughter won Student Council Treasurer partially by having really creative different posters that made her stand out. Sometime it helps to step out the box and show you
would bring new ideas to the organization.

^ HAHA HSLmod a new member?

Watch out hes a mod

Popularity contest. BUT one way to win would be marketing yourself REALLY well. Like a trendy, cool way of advertising like white vnecks w/ a cleanr, cool slogan/design and cool posters and stuff. Have all your friends and people you know or don’t know wear it like once a week at the same day, at least. Also, one girl from my school made tags like “JESSICA FTW” and attached it to random people’s bags and backpacks and teacher’s stuff XD

Good Luck, hope I helped. :)

I beg to differ that High school elections are all popularity contest. Heck, I was one of the nerdiest kids in my school ( not kidding), went against 5 of the most popular kids in my grade, and won the V.P slot with a landslide.
It all depends on how you carry your speech during the election. Don’t simply read it from the paper, that’s boring. For mine, I read the first three words, looked up, ripped my paper in front of 500+ kids, and started doing a speech impromptu. All you need is the passion to show in front of everyone. If those kids laugh, well raise you voice higher! Make some hand gestures, be sure and firm that you’re serious. If you are the only freshman in A.P Cal B.C, chances are kids will think you’re super smart over the popular girl. They might think you’re better off with the job than her, if you show how serious you are, and how well of a public speaker you could be.
Don’t just think that since you’re in high school, kids around you are 2D and can’t think on their own. If you give them a good message, I’m pretty sure they’ll respond right back.

^^^^No one would pick a name like that without being knowledgable
(s)he’s got to be:
- someone who has lurked for a very long time
- A multi of someone whose posts I necro <–hopeful
- A multi of IMFROMCHINA92

Of course it is a popularity contest, and oftentimes, life will be. Academics take you far, but if you really want to achieve something, you need to develop the social skills that allow you to communicate with a variety of people.

If anything, being smart can help you achieve popularity. Being very intelligent leads to name recognition, and if you develop a outgoing, amiable personality, you basically have it made.
