Oh that’s super helpful. Thank you!! As a former investment banking analyst I can say it’s not for everyone. Good perspective. I think I struggle with it some bc I think it’s ridiculous having been on the other side of it. But club soccer for 6 year olds is also ridiculous but here we are. It’s just how things are now. Thanks for the link!
Can someone please walk me through what happens next, after a kid gets admitted to BSB Finance but is waiting to hear about request review/Kelley?
- when did people hear about merit scholarships (I am not sure if he will get one or not, but he received some from other schools so maybe
)
- how do we find out about Kelley? I know it will likely happen in April, but has anyone heard earlier? And if yes, how?
Thanks in advance!
On second bullet, I had the same question so I looked at last year’s tracker board. (From memory) seemed like a tranche of admits came in Feb, then it was quiet until April. Also seemed like the bulk of decisions in Feb were positive and the bulk in April were negative.
For OOS students there is a Deans Scholarship which amount varies quite a bit from approx $4,000-$11,000 per year. It’s based on high gpa, not test scores. And not everyone gets it. You should hear upon general acceptance to IU.
My daughter also received a scholarship from Kelley after she was admitted DA off of the review request last year.
I would hope they would start reviewing requests and letting at least some kids know sooner than April. Direct Admit days are in March and they want to get students there to commit
Where did you find the info on the scholarship? My son has a GPA of 4.0 (Not sure of weighted, we don’t use that in Canada - but he is at an IB school). Thank you
I have 2 IU students, that’s where I get lots of info on those pages and my kids experience.
IU is not known to be generous with merit, you can google IU scholarships.
They have been processing scholarship notifications in a couple of weeks after admission notification. You will receive an email, and it will show up in your admission portal as well.
I believe your student should receive some merit scholarship, but as others have said, it’s not going to be generous, even at the top-end of the spectrum. We had zero expectations, so whatever it was, seemed like a pleasantly surprising Santa Gift while we were enjoying our winter break in Cancun.
Well said! Thank you!
I have 2 Hoosiers! One not Kelley, super happy on the golf team. One freshman Kelley, doing amazing academically, but frats and bus frats are tough.
Kids need to consider the overall experience!!
Don’t get sucked in. I wish we picked the private Catholic school choice
Thank you for the advice! We are also trying to convince our daughter to consider the same choice! She has a large scholarship to a private catholic school with a selective small honors cohort in the business program and they fund two trips, one abroad. But she seems to be drawn to the big rah rah schools. But she’s in at a few and we are taking into consideration everything we are hearing about the business frats.
There are lots of club and other opportunities outside of workshops and bus frats. This part is not make or break for resume building. Kelley reputation alone will be helpful on the career path.
I’m not talking about resume building. I’m talking about ‘finding’ your people, a smaller group to connect within a very large freshman class at Kelley.
My IU Junior has done this easily in a different major
I don’t agree with this. Students have to actively network for the types of jobs they are interested in, maybe accounting job offers might come easily, but outside of that, networking is critical to recruiting success. That’s especially heightened if a student wants the uber competitive jobs in quant shops, IB, or elite consulting…and some of these companies do want to see certain activities on students’ resumes as well, it’s the nature of the beast.
Has anyone heard anything? Just saw on a Kelley page that someone heard back with a yes
Many students who think they want Finance as incoming Freshman end up changing their major. My point is at any big university there are endless options for involvement and the bus frats and workshops at IU are a bit overhyped. (maybe with the exception of Investment Banking). The career outcomes at Kelley are top notch.
FWIW as a parent of a recent Kelley grad my DS went in planing to major in accounting and ended up graduating with finance. He did not participate in the workshops or the business clubs but did join a frat. His summer internships and job upon graduation was all through connections but I would say the Kelley experience and what he learned has helped him be successful thus far. The point is - it’s hard to get into Kelley, it can be challenging to stay in Kelley but it’s really a lot of who you know at the end of the day. That’s been our experience - so just one perspective from a parent of a recent grad.
That’s great! Kelley is masterful at getting kids prepared for the workplace teaching real life applicable skills so they hit the ground running post college - presentations, interviewing, 2 excel classes and business writing (ie how to write an email). My son started in Finance and switched to Accounting.
I saw that too. The student was homeschooled so maybe there’s something to that? I am hearing that so few will get in through petition this year. Makes me wonder if they will raise the DA stats soon. We are definitely following along but Indiana sits in the number 4 or 5 spot for my daughter at this point if she gets in Kelley. Combine that will the possible wait time and it’s becoming less and less of a focus for her. I supposed it’s similar to any process, if you are in it’s great but if you are deferred etc it’s a tough process. This whole application process is very challenging for all. This is the stuff that makes them have grit. Rejection and redirection will make them stronger. My junior is a super high stats kid who is applying for so many competitive summer programs. And she’s made it to finals rounds for two huge national opportunities. Being a finalist is an honor but constantly being rejected is rough. But you will never know if you don’t try. And if you keep trying, something’s going to hit. Or perhaps you are better off for going through the process. Good luck everyone!!!
Very similar scenario in our house. Son accepted into Marquette with a big scholarship and also applied to honors college. We think it’s a great fit for him.
He is holding out for Kelley petition to make a decision.
Fingers crossed! Options are good to have. What a crazy process!!!
