Hi everyone! I’m a student in Turkey and I’m recently interested in this SAT stuff. Because I’m going to a German school in Turkey, it’s a little bit difficult to learn English, however I think I have improved my English with the help of my American neighbour. I’d like study chemical engineering in Princeton and I have no idea what I need to do except doing a extremely good score in SAT. I’m taking part in Model United Nations Simulations in different places [I’m probably going to be the general secretar in the MUN of my school] and I have some prizes from Maths competitions. Except that, I’m very social and active person. I’m playing tennis, basketball and good in playing violin. I have references from my Maths and Chemistry teachers [they’re coming from Germany and all of them have worked in professional labors or different research institutions] Is it enough for Princeton chemical engineering if I have a good score in SAT? What should I do if it’s not? Help me please…

I’ve really no idea, please help me! I’d like to be informed!

Well firstly you don’t apply to do a specific subject at Princeton, you apply generally and then declare your major later. So at this point it doesn’t really matter what you want to study.

It’s important to note that there’s no way anyone can tell what’s enough for Princeton. You will need good SAT scores, as well as subject tests. More importantly you need to be able to sell yourself as a well-rounded student. Sign up for the Common Application and it’ll help you through the application process.

Also make sure you have back up colleges in your own country (unless you don’t need financial aid in which case if you really want to study in the US you can find some ‘safety’ choices there)

The first step is to sign up for the October SAT and November Subject Tests (make sure you write 3).

thanks a lot fo your help one more question which tests do I need to take for Princeton? I’m very good at Maths, Physics and Chemistry. In English I have some problems the passages are so long that I couldn’t fully concentrate on them and analyse the main idea in that. However I hope that I can solve these problems by working hard. I’m open for the further advices.

The SAT Reasoning Test tests your math, critical reading skills and grammar. There’s no escaping that.

For the Subject Tests, I suggest you go with math, physics and chemistry.

Good luck!

As Tetris said, sign up for the SATs as soon as possible. You don’t have to do specific subject tests but if those are your strengths then it’s best to go with those.

thank you very much for your help… If you need help about anything in Turkey, please write to me. I’m ready to help you, too.

My friend visited Turkey last year and said it was beautiful. I think you have some special salt caves, yes?

yeah that’s right. Especially in the south of Turkey near a city Antalya called there’re many unbelivable beautiful salt caves. If you have free time and opportunity to come to Turkey you should go to Antalya.

I would love to come there! :)

Wanting to get into Princeton is a bit like wanting to win the lottery. The vast majority of fully qualified candidates do not get in–there is simply no space. Most internationals who do get in are among the top students in their countries. So if you really want to go to school in the US, apply to several schools with some being considerably less selective as even the very top American students must.

I know it’s very difficult to get in such a famous and big university at the top in the world. I hope I can handle with this. Because our education system different than yours is, the SAT subject tests mean for us “just learn the terms and do it” There’s only one problem: English This year long I’m gonna try to solve it and if I can, a new step: application I have many good references, I’m an active student in my high school. In spite of that I know that there’s the possibility that I can’t be accepted to Princeton or any others. Because of that, I need to find any other possibilities. In my school we have the possiility to get the German diplom. Maybe, I’ll take the Abitur and go to a German university. But I believe if you don’t want the top you can’t go to the second, either. Thanks for your advices!

A number of the top Chemical Engineering schools in the US (eg MIT) accept the TOEFL as a substitute for the SAT English. Princeton does not allow the substitution. From the Princeton admissions website: “You cannot submit the College Board English Language Proficiency Test as a substitute for the SAT Reasoning Test or for one of the two required SAT Subject Tests.” Good luck.

Then I’m gonna take SAT Reasoning Test and do a good score, but I think I need to start with the preparation. Is it possible to take the subject tests without taking reasoning test?

I don’t think so, as the reasoning, writing and mathematics are all on the same tests.

You need to take the subject tests at a time different from reasoning test. Considering there is so little time left, you might want to consider the ACT as a backup in case your reasoning score isn’t good.

Even though I’m a good student studying in one of the best high schools in Turkey I realize that it’s very very hard to get into Princeton however I’m gonna have a try. Thank you all for your help! They were really very useful for such a beginner like me. don’t hesitate contact me, especially if you’re interested in MUN.
