J Edgar

I just watched the J. Edgar movie with Leonardo. The movie was great. If Leonardo does not get Best Actor I will eat my hat.

Eager to see this film! I first admired Leonardo’s adult acting as Howard Hughes. Even deeper was his take on the tormented, repressed suburban 1950’s husband in Revolutionary Road, if I recall that title correctly.

He had to outgrow the teen hearthrob culture before he got serious feature film roles.

I love Leonardo! Can’t wait to see this one.
Hi p3t - Revolutionary Road was filmed in my tormented, repressed 2000’s suburb.
(How’s hubby?)

Looking forward to seeing it this week!

I haven’t seen Revolutionary Road, missed it somehow.

Also looking forward to the Werner Herzog documentary on the painted caves.

I also thought J. Edgar was great. My husband complained that “not enough happened” in the 2 1/2 + hours, but we both agreed that the acting was great. It helps to know a little US history before you go - the Palmer raids, the Lindburgh kidnapping, the HUAC, etc. It really is a micro-capsule of 20th century American history.

I’m going to see it next weekend with my dad’s best friend. We’re both history buffs and are eager to go see it. (The rest of our families can’t understand why we would want to go watch a serious movie about the past as our “fun Thanksgiving movie”). I’m glad to know that it was a good movie- watching the previews made me really excited. I also can’t remember the last Leonardo movie that I didn’t absolutely love.

DiCaprio has had serious major roles 18 yrs ago since he was 19, in This Boy’s Life * and also * What’s Eating Gilbert Grape & I agree he is a fine actor.

I wasn’t as taken with J Edgar though, the makeup to age the two leads was heavy and interfered with the actors ability to portray emotion & I didn’t understand the motivation of the secretary to ignore her own ethics in order to do her boss’s bidding.
They didn’t use such a heavy hand to age Naomi Watts & it was less distracting.

A review by a writer who lived in DC during Hoovers time. ( he was also a speech writer & political advisor for Hubert Humphrey)

Emeraldkity,
I feel so validated! I felt the same way about the movie. Sometimes I am not as crazy about the latest hit as the rest of the public and I am starting to think it is me.

You are so right about the makeup. Their faces were stiff and phony looking. Also, as we age our ears get larger but theirs didn’t. I saw it with my mom and she said that she noticed one scene where Leonardo’s false eyebrow seemed to be coming off.

It was hard to get past that stuff :(

Yes, the makeup could have been better in some parts, but the acting was amazing. The relationship between Hoover and his companion was beautiful regardless of whether you are a fan of such relationships. The movie showed many of the good and bad points of Hoover. The truth is that Hoover built a tremendous organization even though he misused it for his own benefit.

I also loved Leonardo in Shutter Island. I had to watch that one twice to fully appreciate it.

A good biography is J. Edgar Hoover: The Man and The Secrets by Curt Gentry. Reveals just how paranoid, immoral and criminal the man really was - along with quite a few others of our government. He was a true believer in the ends justifying the means.

romanigypsyeyes, what’s your review of the movie?

I haven’t seen the film yet but I love historical movies, the commercials look good, and I greatly admire Leonardo DiCaprio and his acting ability.

However, my history teacher told me today that they were disappointed with the accuracy of historical information in the movie and found errors to be very distracting…

Do you still recommend it?

EDIT: Also, I tend to notice issues with makeup etc., was it difficult to watch the film without paying full attention to that?
