It’s $45,918 for OOS. Right from the financial Aid letter. The indirect costs such as transportation, other educational costs, supplies take it over $51k. But that’s the same with every school. JMU OOS tuition being $32k is lower than many others like Clemson, Auburn, UofSC, CofC.
My child was deferred and I can no longer see their status in the portal. I swear I saw a letter explaining the deferral just this week. Anyone else deferred have this issue? This is all I see when I go to Applicant Center:
I see the same for my deferred kid
Same for my deferred kid. Letter is no longer there
I see the same for our deferred son as well. I think it’s because they are now being considered in the regular decision candidate pool.
We are heading to Choices next weekend. We have never been to the Campus. Anyone familiar with the school/downtown Harrisonburg that can give a recommendation for dinner the night before? Hopefully a place that is crawling with JMU kids, so my son can get an idea of the vibe/student life?
The first restaurant that comes to mind is Billy Jack’s.
Jack Brown’s next door is great during the warmer months because they have outdoor seating(not many seats indoors).
Jimmy Madison’s is also a nice spot.

All three of these restaurants are with a couple of blocks so they should provide a decent concentration of JMU students.
@CA2MA If you want the full on student experience head to Mr. J’s Bagels (the East Market St. location) for breakfast/brunch over the weekend. I ate there in the late 80’s. You’re likely to wait in line, but the line will be 80%+ students.
Thank you!!
For a nice family dinner spot many parents take their Dukes to Vito’s. It’s very good Italian food at reasonable prices.

Slightly more expensive, but also popular when parents are in town, is Rocktown Kitchen downtown.
Important information for Choices
This is non-JMU related. If you get off I-81 at Exit 247 East Market Street, or you end up crossing over 81 on East Market Street during your visit, there is a speed camera in the construction zone right at 81. Do not exceed the posted limit(25mph?) or you’ll receive a ticket in the mail.
Thank you!
My DD went to JMU years back, I concur with these recos!! Not sure if Clementines is still around - but that was a great restaurant as well. But may not give the vibe you’re looking for. A little bit more upscale.
My DD was admitted EA and invited to apply to a COB scholarship in early February. She recently got another email that was sent to all Business Econ students about a departmental scholarship they could apply for. Lastly, she went to the Madison Scholarship Hub to apply for others that the school offers (some still have deadlines due this Friday or later in March): https://jmu.academicworks.com
Rocktown Kitchen & Vito’s
Parent’s Weekend is September 27th and 28th. Book hotels ASAP. You can always cancel them if your child decides not to attend JMU.
Thank you! And you’re right things sure do book up quickly I checked my Bonvoy app not one hotel within 23 miles. I just booked a room at the Massanutten resort which looks pretty amazing anyway! It was $247 a night FYI.
We stayed there years ago and it was really nice with lots to do!
We went to Choices this weekend, and my son liked the school a lot. Kids seemed happy and friendly. I thought it was well-run. I don’t know if he will end up there, but he says it is in his top 4. He is deferred at his #1 choice, so JMU may make his top 3. We also visited VT yesterday, and while the VT campus was beautiful, my son much preferred the vibe at JMU.
Good to hear! My son and his schedule is killing me. We weren’t able to get to Choices last weekend bc his basketball team is in the playoffs and the more they win, the longer this season goes! Only for baseball to start one week later. So he may not be able to get to the next ones either uuuugh.
