I am new to this board. Has anyone heard anything back from the 1/23 auditions at UArts for the MT program. My son auditioned and got a call back. He had a really good feeling about how it went. Some of his friends who auditioned on 12/5 were notified by 12/12/09 which is great only to have to wait a week. So, if anyone knows anything, please let me know.

My D auditioned for acting and was called back as well. My impression was that we might hear next week. I seem to remember them saying about 3 weeks after. I wonder if they were waiting until after Unifieds were done to make decisions.

Well, my S got his letter today and found out that he was wait listed. We called his admissions counselor and that means he has to wait until May to see if they are going to call him off of the list. More waiting…

A little bit of hope, MTMom – you may not be notified about coming off the waitlist until May, but it is possible after the completion of auditions that he would know sooner. And - here’s an early plug that will probably be repeated on the forum as spring approaches: If you get multiple offers, take the time you need to consider them, but if you KNOW there is an acceptance or 2 that you’re not going to take - let them know as soon as you decide, so that others will be able to find out their status as soon as possible.

That really is not what is referred to as a wait list. Your son is deferred until all auditions are completed and then they can finish filling the slots that remain and your son is still in contention for those slots.

A wait list is something that is created AFTER all slots are offered and some applicants are offered a spot on a wait list in case those who are offered admission don’t take the offer. That is not the same as a deferral.

I believe your son is deferred which is very positive. It means he is still in contention for a spot in the class. It doesn’t mean that he has to wait to see if those offered take a slot. That is my understanding given this time of year. Wait lists go out when all the admissions offers are all made.

I believe soozie is correct. At UArts, if it is the same as in the past, within 2 weeks after an audition, letters are sent to those about whom the school has definitely made up its mind. Everyone else is thrown into the mix and is still in contention until final decisions are made after the audition cycle is concluded. The fact that your son did not receive a rejection letter is a good sign. Don’t assume the worst!

Your positive comments are great. I have been reading this board for a while and it seems like you guys are pretty much the veterans so I will believe what you tell me. I hope that I can soon come back and post the he got accepted. This is one of the only schools that I know of that basis the majority of their decision on the talents of the kids and not a super hight GPA or ACT/SAT score. If anyone knows of any schools that operate similiarly to UArts please let me know so we can keep auditioning. Also, anyone have any truthful comments about AMDA?

MTMom…fingers crossed for your son at UArts but no way of knowing if he’ll be accepted. Basically, he is still in the running.

To read comments about AMDA, you should use the Search function on CC and search just the MT Forum and search for AMDA. Plenty of threads and posts on it. Further, it is best to keep the UArts forum threads on UArts. The AMDA threads are best in the general MT Forum.

As far as other schools that either don’t weigh academics a lot or else have a low academic bar to jump…I think there are several but honestly this is too late to start adding schools to a list, I believe. The application due dates are mostly past due, the audition slots are filled, and doing a Walk In at Unifieds in NYC is past now as well. Hopefully your son has applied to several schools and not just UArts, right?

He has applied to 2 others and did not get in due to academics. We are going to forge ahead to possibly Montclair state and then probably just our community college. Im going to be praying hard over the next couple of months.

No word yet. Not sure what that means since it sounds like some who auditioned that same day got letters saying they are still under consideration. We’ll just keep checking the mail.

MTMom, I don’t know how you or your son feel about two year conservatory programs for MT, but these don’t involve any academic component for admission, let alone no academic courses in the program. It is not too late to apply and audition at Circle in the Square Theater School in NYC or CAP21 Professional Musical Theater Training Program in NYC…both are two year programs in MT by audition. He could audition just to have that option even if he were not to choose to attend next year, but to keep some options on the table for now.

Thanks for the insight. However, the CAP21 program states that it isn’t accreditied yet and that you cannot get financial aid so that would probably not be an option. Circle in the Square, I will look into it, but I hate to pay that much money just for a 2 year program. We are not giving up yet I just can’t wait for him to get a letter saying you are in somewhere. In the mean time we will keep our fingers crossed about UArts since he is still in the running there is still hope.

He may not want to go to a BA program where he will have to take a greater number of gen ed classes… BUT Plymouth State University in NH is a rolling admissions school with upcoming audition dates –

Students do need to be accepted academically to Plymouth as well as artistically to declare the major, but depending on your son’s stats he may meet the academic threshold.

I used to teach there, and have worked with current students and graduates. Plymouth students are well trained and great to work with. The department fosters a nurturing environment while empowering students to reach their full potential. Graduates of the program are working professionally after graduation.

It may or may not be the right fit for your son, but could be worth looking at.

Soozievt, (I realize this shouldn’t be on the U of Arts thread) Sorry! I find it curious that on one hand you relegate AMDA to the general threads and then suggest Circle and CAP to MTMOM2010. I believe that AMDA gets a bad rap. My D avoided it for over a year because of ‘bad threads’ and when she decided she needed a break from academics and performance together, she begrudgingly explored AMDA, and Circle plus a few other 2 year programs. She is at AMDA now, and has been since October. She loves it very much, and after being in two other performance program colleges, she has found her niche. She has had a few instructors who have seen something strong in her and have gotten wonderful results in such a short time. At Rising Stars, or what ever the program is called that your D was talented enough to perform in, had more kids from AMDA than any other place, if I am remembering correctly. It once more is really all about know what you need and who you are. Sorry to sound grumpy… get tired of kinda dissing AMDA.

MTMOM2010, if you have any specific question about AMDA, please feel free to PM me.

MtMom 2010 - You might also want to check out Westminster Choir College. I noticed they added a March audition date. I know someone who was accepted into Ryder for another major with less than stellar high school performance. Westminter Choir College has its own thread so you could ask about academics there. My son who is now a freshman at U Arts and loving it went to a summer program a few years ago at WCC and really enjoyed it. I hope you get good news from U Arts.

If Uarts decides they want you off of the waitlist/deferred list, do they make you an offer over the telephone or do you get a letter in the mail? Just curious. We have an audition for Montclair coming up in March and maybe Shenandoah and Penn State.

KatMT, Just a note of thanks for your input on the Plymouth State University program. My D. loved the people there and liked the school. She recently found she was accepted into the MT program. In the research I have done I have found it is a very good program with excellent professors and good results for graduates. I am hoping my D will hear from other schools so she will have choices but even with that, the choice may be PSU. It is delightful to have that in her back pocket.
