I can almost guarantee that you will have more free time in college than in high school. There is a consensus among everyone I know that this is true.

This is because, in college, you simply spend less time in class. I remember in high school that I would have to spend a great amount of time every night completing homework because I had class everyday. High school teachers are also notorious for piling on a great deal of busy work. This simply isn’t the case in college.

As a biological sciences major, i’m wondering how difficult it is to get the classes you need? Totaling up my AP credits, i would have 40 credits, but does that mean i would still have a freshman status even after (+~16) units from the fall semester? I’m really worried about being able to get the classes I need with all the competition out there, :(

once you surpass 45 units, you will be considered sophomore standing. during summer you’re going to be enrolling with other freshmen during spop, but you should have an earlier enrollment for winter quarter.

That’s a no, actually, since they randomize all the enrollment windows for students that are below 45 units.

When you enroll for winter, you will be randomized, since you technically only have 40 units, they don’t include the units you’re taking currently in the fall because you haven’t completed the classes yet.

You will be in great shape for Spring and the NEXT fall quarter enrollment.

i think they do include the units you are currently taking… i’ve had better enrollment windows as a sophomore when i had one more class at the time than some friends, even if we had the same amount of units until that quarter

ETA: from the website

“Undergraduate class levels are determined by the student’s total number of completed units plus their current units. (Completed units include units from AP scores and units transferred from other institutions.)”

I’m probably wrong on that one, or not, but I do remember last quarter when I was registering for Spring, my enrollment window was after other freshmen who came in with less than 10 credits, when I came in with 22. (If Fall and Winter credits are factored in already, I would have been past the sophomore level mark).

But 100% sure, students under 45 units are randomized in terms of enrollment windows.

But if you need to get into class, ALWAYS check webreg to see if someone dropped. Set Webreg as a bookmark so you can check everytime you turn on your browser. You should be able to get in the waitlist, AT LEAST.

Psychology majors:
Psych OR Psych and Social Behavior?

Course load? Difficulty? Job market? I read the descriptions of both majors, but is there a real difference in what kind of jobs you can get? Grad school?

I recommend CV, closer to campus, you have your own ap’t with 3 other ppl, kitchen, etc. while in AV you have to ride shuttle, share a kitchen with 16+ ppl, share bathroom with at least 8 ppl,

CV also has academic year leasing now, which is great! CV is a bit cheaper too

hey jason,
i’m a currently a sophmore in high school right now, and i want to attend uci majoring in english. i was just wondering, what do you think i need to do to get in? my gpa last semester was horrible, but my gpa this semester has improved a lot. what does uci look for in a korea female? lol, as in sat/gpa/EQ wise?

It’s great that you’re thinking about this early. The best thing you want to do is get the highest numbers while keeping yourself very rounded. In undergraduate admissions, UCI will gauge your application depending on your major and English is not impacted at all. However, the extent at which they change their admissions process per major is very small, because students normally switch majors after joining UCI. In conclusion, the best way to prepare is to get SAT scores/GPA above the average for the admitted students (this can be found on the UCOP website) and join any extracurricular clubs/activities that you a)enjoy a lot and b)can learn something valuable so you have something to write about in your essays.

If you really want to show you’re perfect for English, take more courses in English at a community college. Also, you can maybe talk about it in your essay in the future (there are three essays so there will be space somewhere). Other than that, keep working hard and never stop! BTW, there is no discrimination against race in the UC system. Please refer to this California Proposition in the link below:

I still 100% agree with that. In fact, my great experience in college partially stems from the fact that I had no choice but to stay on campus over some weekends due to events and/or study groups/projects.

Is the CHP workload really tough? I would like to apply for CHP after the first quarter (assuming my grades are up to par of course) but I don’t know if it will be worth it. I understand its main point is that you get priority registration and they push you more. I hear honors Humcore (and the general courseload) is really tough, and if I get in, how will I make up the difference since I didn’t start with the core curriculum that’s required for all CHP students? Does it take a longer time? I’m also hesitant since I can skip courses/get more credit (2 English courses, 2 Calc courses, etc) if I don’t try to do CHP, and I will have Chem1A credit when summer ends. What do you think?

Sorry I had a ton of questions >< Thank you!

The CHP workload includes Humanities core and some extra GE courses which may increase your workload. However, Humanities Core will let you skip a lot of GE requirements because it attacks multiple requirements per course. (UCI typically has one of the most strenuous GE requirements). Applying for CHP will help you gain status in the school for first-in-line class registration, and automatic candidacy for accelerated masters/PhD programs. As for making up Humcore, I’m not too sure… It’s possible you may get waived from the humcore requirements (engineers can opt out). I’m not too sure what you mean by skip courses/get more credit. All in all, humcore is the quickest solution to getting stuff done…but it’s challenging.

18cuts and JeremyJay22:

I’m not too sure about that increasing your chances. It has been awhile since I’ve dealt with dorm stuff too. I’m outdated…oh no! =[

*…do you know if having a roommate preference increases one’s chances of getting Mesa Court? Thanks! *

Both you and the roommate must place each other down as roommates to be selected. Obviously, there’s no guarantee, but with the budget cuts and reduced enrollment, the school isn’t prone to over crowding, so I would say that you would have a good chance.

Hello, I applied for Fall 2010 as a biological sciences major. I’ve been admitted but just received an email from my counselor through the message center that I have not completed enough chem courses as a transfer (I’ve attended De Anza for 2 years and have only completed Chem 1A and am currently taking Chem 1B during the summer). The choices I am given are to consider another major, or, complete the
necesarry prerequisites at DeAnza or elsewhere and re-apply for another term. The alternate majors are (copy pasted):

1). Public Health Policy (under College of Health
Sciences…closest major to Bio)
2). Social Ecology (see all majors online)
3). A Social Science major (except Econ, see majors online)
4). A Humanities major (see majors online)

What do you advise I do? I was planning to major as in biological sciences to become a pharmacist. Thanks.

Hey! So im an incoming junior in high school this year and unfortunately, I was not given the chance to take part in the honors classes which i am afraid might abate my chances of getting in. I am part of the Med-Sci program which is “the path” for people who want to be in the medical field according to my school. [Trabuco Hills] So, I just wanted to know, If I got all A’s in my regular classes, could i still get in? Or Should i take Honors? Cause i really like the program but i dont want that to jeopardize my chances of getting in :(
