Jeans and pants for athletic D

D is not overweight or stocky, and doesn’t appear to have particularly large thighs or buttocks. She looks well-proportioned and average-sized or even thin. According to the pediatrician’s charts she is of average height and a tad below average weight. But I guess she is thicker and more muscular than she appears at a glance, because finding jeans and pants which aren’t really tight in the thighs and derriere is tough. If a pair is looser in the thighs, then the waist sticks out a mile or they’re yards too long. Any suggestions of stores or styles we could try?

PS–she’s 16 and wants them to be stylish, of course.

Find jeans that fit the thighs and booty then get the waist tailored in. A hassle but in the long run it will save time from endless shopping to find the perfect pair of jeans that fit all three criteria.

Someone I know who is younger (like in her mid-20’s) recently raved about the mall store - Buckle or The Buckle - that she always goes to to fit her thin on top and generous on the bottom body-type for jeans. I believe they are fairly fashion trendy.

I know nothing about this store myself though!

TheGFG, my athletic D is built the same way. Gap “Curvy” fit works well for her - and they come in several different lengths, I think.

Everlast! Made for boxers. (I buy mine on-line.)

The Seven7 jeans (not Seven for All Mankind) work well for me, and I have more athletic legs. They’re big enough in the legs and not too big in the waist. I usually do have to get them hemmed though (but I have to get all my jeans hemmed).

They’re dark wash, which is the big thing now…they retail for about $60 but you can get them cheaper at TJMaxx/Marshalls/Stein Mart.

D has the same “problem” due to her sport. . .she definitely looks better (or more modest)
in a skirt. I can’t stand to see her in jeans, (I suppose the guys don’t mind. . .) and this issue is the source of the only fight I’ve ever had with my lovely D. (Ever heard the country song, “Baby’s Got Her Bluejeans On”?)

Delias has all their pants available in multiple lengths (26"-37" inseam) so you can get the fit she needs in the hips and then have 7 options for the leg length.

I’ve got a size 00 with a 34" inseam who has the thighs of a gymnast/dancer. We go to Delia’s and try on to get the fit through the legs, then order online to get the length (since they don’t carry her length in the store). Delia’s almost always has a buy one get one half off promotion going on.

We’ve also had success at Buckle, but their jeans are expensive.

I’m not sure if this is the style that she is looking for, but often the casual (not athletic) pants at women’s athletic stores like Title 9, Athleta, and Activa, say that they are made more to fit athletes. It might be worth trying a pair or two.

When my daughter was riding ( horses) she had a hard time with jeans, cause her thighs were much more muscular than her body type would suggest.
Things to remember
Jeans stretch out you don’t want to get them too loose.
LOts of stores stock several different cuts however- but it does take a lot of trying on before you find the right one.
I like Lucky jeans, they are more expensive than regular Levis, but they have lots of coupons if you get on their mailing list.

I will also plug Buckle. Yes, they are a bit expensive, but it’s one of the few stores where we have found jeans to fit my extremely athletic D. To make matters worse, she bulked up so much for her sport a year ago she had to buy replacement jeans to accommodate the additional muscle.

Buckle carries a great selection of lengths, brands and styles and she’s always gotten good wear out of their products. I just know if I go shopping with this child I’m in for a bit of a day as it can take trying on many different jeans to find the right pair for a good fit. One must be willing to persevere when it comes to finding the perfect pair of jeans!

My D has the riding muscles but is a size 0 and also has short legs. We have found she just needs to try on lots of different styles. We have gotten lucky on several occasions to find high end designer jeans on the clearance rack at Macy’s or Nordstrom rack. Joe’s jeans makes a petite cut that is a little higher waisted but roomy but not baggy in the thighs. She just bought her first pair of Lucky jeans with one of those great coupons emeraldkity4 mentioned. They are “skinny” jeans but have ample room in the thigh.

Atomom-my D has that problem in denim shorts. It definitely is not the most attractive look. I try to not say anything since I don’t want her to be critical of herself.

My daughter has had very good luck finding jeans that fit well by using the following method. Go to large department store (Nordstrom’s works for us) and try on all jeans–regardless of style or opinion of style–that are anywhere near the right size. One person stays in dressing room while other person brings jeans. Run through them quickly to find the ones that fit correctly. THEN look at the styles.

Using this method, she has consistently been able to find three or four pairs that fit the way she wants them to fit.

She is decisively not an athlete, but since she bicycles to and from her job–which is ten miles each way–she might as well be.

Same problem with my swimmer girl. Size 4 waist but not legs. I find that if I look for something that is straight all the way down…fit the widest part of the leg…it usually works if we go up a size. ‘Curvy’ style works as well…land’s end makes them but you usually can’t find them at Sears but they have them on-line/catalog.

Curvy is also great if you are tired of seeing 1/3 of your d’s undies every time she sits down…

Don’t know if the styles would appeal to a teenager but Eddie Bauer stores also have curvy jeans.

D1 is three sport athlete and has the thighs and booty to prove it! Lucky jeans, BKE at The Buckle, some from Express and 7’s all seem to be ones she leans toward. They work on commission at Buckle so they will scour the store to help you make a purchase. She has also been lucky to find True Religion jeans at Nordstrom Rack that look fabulous on her. More $$$ but good discounts there. Look for bootcut or wide legged style. Marshall’s and TJ Maxx also carry some of the designer styles for less.

I had to ask a friend on this but she recommended True Religion. There are a few styles that are stretchy to accommodate athletic thighs and legs and will give you an incredible fit (and look fabulous too  ). If you need a jean, no matter what your size, walking into their store is like heaven and is my favorite jean brand next to D&G.

Best of luck on your search!

Look also to a brand called Apple Bottoms, as they are geared toward the traditionally more fully endowed hips and thighs of women of color.
