What about those that abetted? So let’s say someone knew (beyond a reasonable doubt) that horrible things were taking place, should they not be held liable? Because it seems a lot of people were aware - sadly.
yes..because like in other cases (think a specific church)…the cover up is as bad as the crime. Because it allows the crime to continue.
Abetting = a crime. So yes, of course should be prosecuted.
…is also not likely to commit suicide out of remorse, guilt or shame.
So — who got him killed?
Totally agree.
Many sociopaths have, however, committed suicide when cornered.
Not all would, and I will readily admit I don’t know if Epstein did or would have, but sociopathy isn’t purely a focus on survival instincts.
I think what the most recent revelations have shown is that even physicians- mandated reporters according to NY State Law– were able to turn a blind eye to what was readily apparent in retrospect. You’re a respected Gynecologist (which the two doctors in the most recent data dump were and still are) and you’re treating 12 year olds for STD’s and that doesn’t ring any alarm bells? They are too young to give consent. Random women are bringing them in claiming to be their mom’s– and nobody asks any questions? One of the doctors was on a monthly retainer– a man who was paying in advance for gynecological care for different young girls every single month– and nobody connects the dots with the STD’s? None of the girls had health insurance and yet some guy in his 40’s is paying out of pocket for thousands of dollars at a time and that doesn’t trigger some suspicion- coupled with the physical evidence?
One of my kids took a fall (was about 19 months old) and at the ER, spouse and I were immediately separated, interviewed by both the ER pediatrician and the attending and THEN got a visit from the county child protection representative. Separately. Asked to prove our identities multiple times (other than saying “my toddler was born at this hospital, you can look us up”, how do you prove you are the parent when you raced out of the house without your handbag?)
So I have nothing but respect for the process as annoying and scary as it was. Physicians are mandated reporters; Child Protection professionals need to establish that you are who you say you are (the parents of the patient) and then help determine if a crime has been committed, or the cover-up to a crime, or just a suspicious injury which needs more evidence. Respect.
But how did so many adults fail these girls, given that the systems and procedures were already in place to protect them? I get the whole “Epstein Island” mentality- secluded, no rules, no law enforcement. But girls being exploited on the Upper East Side- a few blocks away from hundreds of gynecologists, 6 or 7 major hospitals, entire teams of professionals with the NYPD who investigate crimes against children- and NOBODY called it in?
It’s horrible that Drs as mandated reporters did nothing wrt the young girls brought to them for medical care. I cannot fathom that they did not consider that sexual abuse/trauma had occurred.
Well, if they were receiving monthly retainers, those must have been pretty hefty amounts for them to keep their mouths shut.
Money does a lot of evil things.
Maybe someone should look at the financial records of those Upper East Side gynecologists.
I really hope the OB/GYNs who enabled this monstrous network are prosecuted. They did nothing to protect these defenseless young girls!
Happening now, according to the latest news. Doctors claiming that patient privacy prevented them from “coming clean” which of course is absurd– patient privacy in this case could be another term for criminal conspiracy.
Being a mandated reporter overrides patient privacy.
exactly.
Both of the “retainer” gynecologists are still practicing, according to the internet sleuths. Remains to be seen what the next step is…
We do of course hear from time to time about doctors sexually abusing kids and adolescents (such as sports team doctors abusing young members of their team), so my first thought would be that perhaps these were that sort of doctor.
No evidence (yet) of that. Just docs willing to do a “concierge medicine” plan for a wealthy middle aged man sending in streams of young girls for medical care; no insurance claims and thus no paper trail.
Hardly any better, even if the doc wasn’t abusing the girls!
And that’s crazy - you think the retainer would be for the client or client’s family, not people they are not legally responsible for.
What is the oath doctors take ?
You’re probably thinking of the Hippocratic Oath, but it hasn’t been used by doctors for a long time. (Since WW2 at least).
The reason? It requires a physician to swear fealty to 4 pagan gods, promise to not share guild secrets with any non-physicians, promise not abuse their indentured students and swear they will share their income with any fellow physicians in financial need. It also requires them to eschew any and all types of surgery, and forbids abortion and euthanesia.
What most medical schools use today is The Declaration of Geneva
England is taking action…another high profile arrest. I don’t know if this person is accused of sex crimes though vs just having a relationship of some sort.
Paywalled. I thought we were only supposed to use links that can be read by everybody.
