Was surprised to see champ at end of last season wasn’t defending tonight. But back in July they were only taking local contestants from what I have seen. Alex said he would be back in a couple weeks. Guess he will go against someone who has already won at least one game?
^^ thanks for that info. I wondered why there wasn’t a champ from the last episode.
Our station that carries jeopardy! doesn’t use the same clock as other stations, so even though we turn it on after the news, at 6, they’ve already started the intros and announcing the categories. It doesn’t help to record it either as the listings of shows still says ‘Channel 31 news’ from 5:30 to 6, and it isn’t 6 yet. Very annoying.
It was fun to see how far away they are. My daughter got Final Jeopardy! right, so she won all the money.
Strange ending on today’s episode. Final Jeopardy question was Who is Berry Gordy? One of the contestants put Barry Gordy and was ruled incorrect. Historically they have not penalized for misspellings as long as you didn’t add a syllable. Or misspell it beyond recognition. Seems to me based on past precedent, they should have accepted that response. In the end, the ruling didn’t change the result because the contestant would have finished in third even had they ruled in her favor.
Not sure what to think of the Ken clues. Seems like its forcing him into the show (and he doesn’t need to be forced into it as he will always be a part of it).
Also tonight, the woman on the far right who answered that red coccineal dye comes from a beetle was ruled incorrect–they were looking for “insect”. Coccineal dye comes from the coccineal BEETLE. I expected they would come back from commercial with a correction, but it didn’t happen. She finished a distant third, so the game outcome was not affected, but the “referees” dropped the ball in this instance.
Why yes, I am a nerd.
I was wondering about the wrong vowel too. Wasn’t there a woman in the summer repeats who had a series of horrific spellings in Final Jeopardy that were deemed correct enough?
One time someone on Final wrote Rooservelt rather than Roosevelt and they called it wrong because he added a syllable. If they would have given the answer orally, I’m sure they would have been correct.
She changed the pronunciation of his name which is why I assume her answer was incorrect. That’s why they tell you not to give more of an answer than necessary. If she’d only answered Gordy, she would’ve been correct.
In my part of the world, the pronunciation of Barry and Berry is identical
I agree on the Berry Gordy answer–she gave too much info and the additional info was unfortunately incorrect. If she had written Beary Gordy, would she have been ruled correct?
The different pronunciations are a good theory as to why the response was deemed wrong., although the pronunciation of Barry and Berry are identical in my world too.
(Are we back on the Mary, marry, merry discussion? All the same in my world.)
I have read that they distanced the judges from each other. In the past, they sat next to each other. Wonder if that hampers their interactions in making rulings?
They can stop taping to make rulings.
But how often do they actually do that? And in the past it seemed like the judges sitting next to each other would confer and make a ruling pretty much on the spot. Now maybe they stopped taping to get there but it just isn’t obvious on the broadcast. If they are now distanced, that process may not be as easy/seamless.
Usually score corrections are announced when coming out of commercial breaks–don’t see why that cannot continue. Judges can still confer even if they are seated 6 ft from each other.
But we are not in usual times. I don’t know if the placement of the judges has anything to do with the ruling. Just tossing it out there as a possiblity knowing its a change from how they operated for decades. From watching the show for the last 30+ years and what I have seen online in response, seems like the judges got it wrong for one reason or another.
Jeopardy Fan (which has a recap of every episode – SPOILER ALERT – THEY RESULT FROM EPISODES AIRING IN THE MORNING EACH DAY AND THUS ARE AVAILABLE BEFORE THE NIGHTLY SHOWS MOST PEOPLE WATCH and a ton of stats and history about the show), said this:

Or Yanny and Laurel.
Reminds me of an old episode of Password where Marcia Wallace railed against the judges for hairy vs Harry.

I seriously doubt that Rubeus Hagrid could ever make that distinction
Anyway, 2 things I learned this week: I have been misspelling Mr. Gordy’s first name all my life and he is not dead.
Of course it’s not obvious when they stop taping for the judges to confer or for a technical issue, but it does happen. That’s what post-production editing is for.
During orientation, contestants are warned not to give more info than necessary because if your answer is not completely correct then it’s wrong. Betsy didn’t heed that warning.
Betsy even noted that she was debating in her mind whether it was with an A or E. Clearly at that point she should have gone with just the last name. Easier said sitting on your couch than under the bright lights with the clock ticking.
