I want to start by saying that I lovelovelove UVA for a lot of reasons. I love the campus, Charlottesville, the academics, everything. However, I was wondering if anyone could tell me a bit about job placement after UVA. I’m concerned that UVA might not offer the same job opportunities (in cities like NYC) as other schools might, but I would be more than pleased to know that this is not true. Any help would be appreciated! Also, how is the alumni network at UVA?

Paging Globalist…

The alumni network in major cities (and many no-so-major cities) is strong. Take a look at Globalist’s posts. Globalist is a UVA graduate who is working in NYC who often mentions interactions with other UVa alumni.

Thank you, Dean J!

^ From a few years ago…
I’ve been looking for new info the past couple years, but career services doesn’t seem to put it out anymore. Anyway - this should give you a rough idea of how UVa students do job and gradschool wise. It’s separated by major, which I think is very useful. Keep in mind that the economy was better in 06 and 07 than it is right now. On the bright side, the hiring situation will probably look better by the time you should graduate.

If you’re interested in McIntire stats (not listed above): [Statistics and Information](http://www.commerce.virginia.edu/career_services/stats/Pages/index.aspx)
These are more recent and much more detailed. McIntire students tend to do much better on average than UVa students as a whole, especially on the NYC front. No surprise there.

Just anecdotal but the engineering students seem to do very well also. Son '09 had no problem finding a job . The other kids in engineering that he knew seemed to have landed good jobs as well. Many UVa grads end up in DC area as well. There are tons of grads working in DC and northern Virginia. It’s a great area for young people but is expensive (as is NY of course).

Yes, engineering students at UVa also do very, very well when it comes to getting jobs. As sevmom noted, we do especially well in the DC area. Most graduates I know have gone on to work near DC after graduation. It’s not hard to get a job elsewhere, but DC seems like the default location (I’m not sure whether the primary reason for this is personal preference or recruiter concentration).

For what its worth, I really respect that you’re thinking about what comes after college. I have too many friends who went into school thinking “I’ll go to whatever college ‘feels right’, regardless of the cost”. In the past year, many of them have been smacked in the face by a combination of student debt and lack of job prospects.

To the OP, Re: New York opportunities-The Virginia Club of New York is in residence at the Yale Club of New York City. Their ad in the Uviversity of Virginia Magazine talks about providing its members with social, athletic, cultural and networking opportunities. There are many alumni in New York (and many other large cities) . The alumni network seems quite strong.

thank you all for your responses! clearly uva has many opportunities. also, while i am undecided on a career/major as of now, i’m glad to see uva has successes in many (most!) areas!

thanks again!

What other schools are you considering?

Even if you’re officially undecided, if you have a vague idea of what you want to study it may help direct advice.

This is one of the main reasons I want to attend UVA. The alumni network is INSANE. I take the train every day to school, and I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I’ve been stopped. Just yesterday, a guy walked up to me and said “Virginia?” I respond, “Yea, I just got accepted there. I’m beyond happy.” This guy had to be at least 70, he pulls his coat aside, and shows me a UVA pin he has on his blazer. That is the kind of dedication UVA alumni holds. I can’t wait to attend! UVA follows you your entire life.

thank you all for your help!

i’m potentially interested in journalism, but that is definitely not for sure yet. i don’t know if that changes anything.

Ok I know this is a dead thread but this is the only relevant thread I saw.
could anyone tell me the chances I have of getting into Wharton for MBA if I do engg from UVA? cause ill minor in engineering business from UVA, and major in maybe mechanical or computer.
also would it be easy to get into a UC preferably Berkeley or LA for Masters?
All of this supposing I earn a Bach from uva in engg

The folks I know in MBA admission aren’t just concerned with where you did your undergrad work. They are also concerned with what relevant experience you bring to the table as a result of the work you do after college. Obviously, interviews and testing play a role as well.

While there are some students who go right into MBA programs after college, that isn’t really doesn’t seem to be the norm.

Dean J, can you talk about the Alumni network in the West–outside of California?

I have a few engineering friends that moved out West and they seem to be doing very well. One moved in with two UVa grads, one a year earlier and one that graduated with our class. Didn’t know the folks before moving out there but found them through the UVa club out there. Both comment that even folks on the West coast see the value of UVa.

What would you like to know?

There are UVa Clubs all over the country (and world):

[Locations - UVaClubs](<a href=“UVA Clubs Global Network”>UVA Clubs Global Network)

Oh, thank you. I went ahead and read the Congratulatory Call script, for good luck. Are there local “accepted students events?” And are alumni usually helpful for networking and informational interviews? Does UVA provide networking events on campus, or is that a career-services, individually-tailored process?

Wow that’s pretty cool. I was just wondering because I plan on living in Cali after studying from UVA, so its good to know that i most probably wont have any difficulty in finding employment. I hope.
As for MBA I know it ain’t the norm but I think I wanna do it so ill have to find out how easy or hard it is to get in.
thanks people

Dean J, could you tell me if UVA meets full financial aid? I heard and read that it does, but a few people have indicated that after being accepted they were not given enough finance that they could attend, i.e their EFC was higher than they could afford. that sort of scared me to be honest because our income is really low and UVA is my first choice. I’m still waiting for my financial package.
if they expect me to pay more than I can afford, is there anything I can do? I dunno I really hope they are able to do something so I can make ends meet.
Thank in advance

UVa meets 100% of demonstrated need. “Demonstrated need” is determined by the financial aid forms and the packaging process. Some people believe they have more need than the forms say they have.
