Jobs at UVA?

How difficult is it to get a job somewhere near/on campus? Is it harder to get a job 2nd semester? I was thinking of waiting a semester to get adjusted to everything before I took that on too. And with no experience whatsoever? Is it going to be impossible to get a job? Or any input at all into this. Is it difficult to balance job/classes? Thanks (:

Usually it’s better to wait until second semester to get a job. It might be a bit hard to get something that close to campus since there’s not ā€œtooā€ many places hiring around. But if you look around you might find something.

Balance is all about what you do. It’s possible to do well at classes and have a job.

If you take time to look, jobs are pretty easy to come by for students. Of course there are the typical jobs like waiting tables and working at semi-fast food places (chipotle, panera, ice cream shops) but UVA also employs students. Many students work in the fitness centers and libraries. Also, some students grade papers or work at as a TA (teaching assistant) - they arn’t hired by professors but by the schools the professors are a part of (school of engineering, school of architecture, etc). The intramural sports office also hires students three times a year to officiate various sports.

expect jobs to be harder to come by this year though…

I have been wondering about this topic a lot also. I am going to be a second year, and I think I’m going to try and get a job this semester. Is it generally hard to get a job on grounds without work study?

As for a more specific question that someone may be able to help me out with: does the UVA writing center hire undergrad tutors; if so how does one apply?

any help would be much appreciated- thanks!

definitely plenty of places to look, whether on or off grounds. restaurants/shops off grounds(i.e. the corner, i know every time i go to bodos the cash registers have hiring signs on them). on grounds: bookstore, west range and other food shops, bookstore, gyms(many diff jobs in and around the gyms), IM-rec(refs, supervisors), Newcomb Hall(for working and managing events, conference rooms, events, etc).

i’ve had friends in each of the things i’ve mentioned and they were fine balancing work with class and social life.

I think it is going to be harder to find jobs on grounds this year. The department I work for is cutting their ugrad staff like crazy. My boss sent me the list of applicants to help him choose the rest of his staff and I feel really bad we can’t hire a lot of them who are really qualified. :frowning: It might even be that no one who didn’t work last semester gets to work this semester, which is crazy.
