John Lennon

I was in high school and was in my room listening to the radio. Howard Stern was a DJ in Detroit then and he played Imagine and then made the announcement.

Wow, PG. You got hammered so much that no one seems to have noticed (or have cared) that my brother was a physician on duty in the ER at Roosevelt hospital when they brought Lennon in.

I do! I enjoy hearing PG’s Beatles stories.
jym626, I noticed! I’d like to hear your brother’s account of that night, too.

From what I recall, there was nothing they could do…

It’s been over 50 years since JFK was killed. To be honest, I had the same reaction to John Lennon’s death as to JFK’s. These were people who were senselessly killed…and who had contributed to the world as I knew it in a huge way.

I noticed, jym :-)

<a href=“Lennon at 70! | Vanity Fair”>http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2010/09/john-lennon-at-70-201009

If your brother and the other doctors had been successful, this might have been the result …

“Successful” probably meant a resurrection :(

Pizzagirl- thanks for sharing that.
I was in law school and had just moved to NY. His death hit me hard and I spent days after that just hanging out with other sad people outside the Dakota. Even though it’s been many years, I still am saddened by another senseless loss due to a nut with a gun. Just because it was thirty four years ago doesn’t mean it isn’t worth reflecting on.

I was in Manhattan with my boyfriend (now husband). We weren’t too far from the Dakota–seemed to be a pall over the city.

I also like hearing these stories. Anyone who doesn’t certainly doesn’t have to read PGs posts or participate.

As a child of a painful divorce, I understand where Pizzagirl is coming from and appreciate her point of view. I also appreciate her extensive Beatle’s knowledge

While I do like listening to the Beatles, I wouldn’t consider myself a fan like some here. However, I was happy to receive some CDs of theirs from some folks recently as they are one of the groups who revived rock and roll for later generations.

As for Lennon’s assassination, I only remembered hearing bits and pieces about it from adults as I was still a baby/toddler back then.

Do enjoy reading the posts for the history and fan content. :)

D2 saw a movie once which incorporated a lot of Beatles music. She kept trying to get me to listen to the soundtrack. Those songs are ingrained into my consciousness, and though I generally can appreciate covers, and think it is great when young people do them, I just couldn’t get into the new versions of songs which were basically the equivalents of lullabyes to me.

Or maybe, as the child of divorced parents, those songs bring back memories of times before the separation. Who knows how the subconscious works all the time?

Thought that Beatles show on TV recently was FABULOUS…and was thrilled to see Ringo and Paul in the audience, and playing the last set together. So wished the other two had been there too.

But talk about covers…I mean really…the best of the best musicians were doing the Beatles on that show. It was great…and I hope they show it again this year.

^^^Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing that show. I liked some, not all, of the covers, but I really enjoyed it.

I remember thinking how great Paul and Ringo looked for their ages.

We had friends in town and didn’t have the TV on so I heard the news on the morning radio. Lots I didn’t understand at first waking up - was he shot in North or South Dakota, and what was he doing there…
I was never a huge Beatles fan but loved so many of their songs since they were (Beatles together time and individually ) much of the soundtrack of my youth.
The theme for my prom was “Here Comes the Sun”… Not that we saw much of that in early May in Seattle…

I found out the next day, very early, as I drove to work at 5 in the morning. I was enjoying all the Beatles songs on the radio (WNEW, FM , NY), and thought it a little strange, but figured John’s album had come out recently, so that was probably it. I remember exactly where I was on my route when the DJ announced John’s death, and I can still see the unlit fast food restaurant in the darkness as I drove past.

I was teaching in a private school in MA. Since it happened well after 10 pm on a Monday evening, I probably didn’t hear the news until Tuesday morning unless I watched the Monday Night Football game.

I’ll never forget the day that the Sgt. Peppers album came out. I was outdoors and heard it blaring from a college student’s three-foot speakers near Kenmore Square in Boston. Those were magical times.

Reviving this thread as its now 35 years ago today that he was shot. In light of the craziness in the world it seems poignant to remember him today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLgYAHHkPFs
It sickens me that starting in January, the home shopping network will begin airing Gun TV in the wee hours of the night. So if you are having a little trouble sleeping, you can tune in at 3 am and buy a handgun. Or a rifle. Or whatever. Lovely. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/television-shopping-network-for-guns-to-launch-next-year-20151203
