June UMD Honors Engineering Orientation?

Just went to Honors Orientation…they didn’t have the AP scores so if you are counting on opting out of classes you might have to gamble with scheduling classes…I just opted out of english class so not knowing AP calc or computer science didn’t change my schedule anyway…Since computer engineering has a preset schedule with 17 credits plus they want you to take the HON100 course bu…t since I opted out of english I only have 15…which isn’t bad for first semester at college taking Honors Calculus and chem class which I am not a fan off. My schedule is ok with times but I didn’t want to waitlist any classes even though they said you could probably still get the class as they continue to open more seats but just wanted to know exactly what my class was…So I would recommend looking over classes before orientation if you and your parents want to look things over if they want an input since you are only with your parents for the 1st hour and then you might not see them till after schedule is made

Advisers said to not take ratemyprofessor to much into consideration since most of students don’t ever comment.
they stated that all the engineering teachers are very good. your can check out previous tests at www.math.umd.edu test bank

regarding books…discouraged about buying new and to contact professor to see if they need the books that is on their syllabus.

My parents felt they had a lot of information for them…some was the same as admitted students day.

Dining plan is weird…that you use more points if you use north side vs south side of campus

you find out your roomate on July 17th and when your check in time and parents will probably dismissed around 4pm that day…your move in day is assigned when you go to orientation

scholarship/529…unless your award specifies what semester. it will automatically be split between both semesters so plan finances accordingly.

Computer–really focus on weight of computer since you will be carrying it around all day…stick to 13-15 inch RAM 4GB and get an external hard drive…depending if you want to take notes on your smartphone or tablet in comparison to writing paper notes will determine if you want a 2 in 1 or table…the IT team came in to spoke during parents session…if you buy Dell from them in store or online you also get a sleeve and a 8gb flash drive…Mac you have to buy in the store.
I still don;t know what to do about computer…I like the loaner option…previously I read that you could buy a separate package for warranty if you brought in your own computer…However, they said they only cover Mac/Dell under the companies warranty if its another brand they will try and fix it but you have to watch your costs…so if you don’t get Mac/Dell you might want to contact the IT Dept.

Summer Homework—all students have to complete an online presentation alcohol and one for sexual misconduct.
