I am currently a VCCS student. I plan to apply to UVA under the GAA. I will have fulfilled all of the gen ed requirements and would expect Junior class standing. I have a 3.9 GPA and could potentially be a candidate for regular admission, but I will be going through GAA because I am afraid that won’t be enough since I am a non traditional student. (I am single, 29, and have two children.) I am serious about my career goals, although late to the game obviously. When I think of ECs, I think of them mostly for my children. Although I have been a girl scout leader for 4 years and sunday school teacher for 1 year, if that counts.

I know GAA only applies to admission to the College of Arts and Sciences. I plan to enroll as a Mathematics major in CAS. What are the chances of getting accepted to Curry School of Education for 5 year BA/MT in Secondary Mathematics Education? Is it tough for transfer students?

I am worried because to complete the program on time, I would basically have to begin my Education classes in my first semester at UVA.

I plan to attend summer session @ UVA at my own expense to fulfill the 2 Teaching pre-reqs and Calculus II & III pre-reqs as a visiting student, since I obviously will not have been admitted yet. (wow, run on sentence,!!!) Teaching pre-reqs and and a recommendation from that teacher is required to enroll in Curry and the two Calculus courses are required to be able to declare a Math major. All three courses will have to be taken over the summer (i.e. after admissions decisions, wipe sweat from brow!)

I am going to indicate my plan to take them over the summer on my application. I will have taken the Praxis I and VCLA before I submit my application and include those scores as well.

What can I do to increase my odds of being allowed to begin in Secondary Education my first semester?
