Just out of curiosity-Tesla

Random thread-Tesla
Last weekend my D and I stopped at a shopping center about 40 minutes from our home to eat dinner. We counted 8 Tesla cars parked getting charged. My D made the statement that what a warped world we lived in where seeing a Tesla is commonplace. She felt that a lot of her friends in the Midwest had probably never seen a Tesla in person.
Since last weekend I am suddenly noticing how many Tesla cars are on the road.
I know people who have one but I have not rode or driven one.
Question- do you see Tesla cars on the road in your community?
Have you driven or rode in one?

Yes and yes! Very popular here in the greater Seattle area.

We are getting one when we get our solar charger installed… it will be a while.

Yes. First time I had dinner with my boss, he picked me up in his Tesla. He offered to let me drive. I said no.

Yes, we see them quite often - possible a daily basis. No, have not ridden in one, although we do a couple of people who have them. But we also live less than five miles from a Tesla dealership, and we are in the midwest.

Pretty common in Silicon Valley. The NY Times, in an article on the crazy real estate squeeze in California, had a photo of a Tesla parked in the carport of a SV trailer park home.

Very common in southern Nevada. I would have bought one last time I purchased a car, but there was no dealership in my town at the time. I couldn’t quite get comfortable with having the closest service option all the way in LA county. We have a dealership now, so maybe my next car will be one of those new cheaper models.

They are pretty common in the L.A. area. A friend of mine has one and I’ve ridden in it–very nice! I can’t imagine buying one myself though, unless they come way down in price.

Calling @IxnayBob, CC Tesla expert.

We have a handful in town but I’ve never been in one.

Pretty soon you will see one parked by our new dilapidated shack here in my neck of the woods.

I have not realized what a time saver a Tesla (or a Leaf or a Volt) could be: no driving around looking for a gas station when you are already late for a meeting and no stupid oil changes either!

Yes and yes. The office complexes that house a lot of “science -y” businesses seem to have several in their lots (and at least one charger).

@teriwitt, technically, there are no Tesla dealerships, but you’re not alone in referring to them that way.

Our small block of 8 houses has 3 Teslas currently, and one Maserati owner so liked his wife’s Model X that he’s getting one also. I have been unable to convince my wife to get one; you can’t imagine how much that bugs me.

@BunsenBurner , that was one of my surprises; I had not realized how transformative it is to wake up each morning with a full load of electrons.

DS’s engineering class checked my car out last year, and they exclaimed that the only fluid that an owner could fill was behind a blue cap: windshield wiper fluid.

Another change is how long brake pads last; I have wonderful Brembo brakes that I seldom use because I let the regenerative braking do its work (full disclosure: regenerative braking is software limited when battery is cold or full).

My X weighs > 5000 pounds but goes 0-60 in 3.6 seconds (it’s one of the slower models now!), drives itself 90% of my longer highway trips, and is one of the safest vehicles on the road. Did I mention that I like it?

They haven’t made their way to Korea yet, but word is that '17 is the year. I’d love one.

Dad of D’s BF has one and allows BF to drive it on occasion. There are very rare in our area. Once D and BF were downtown and ran into some HS friends. Friend says: did you see that Tesla parked down the street? (Because it is a BIG deal here). D says: oh, yeah, it belongs to BF’s dad and he drove it here. Friend couldn’t get her mouth closed.

D has driven it and likes it. Tries to forget about the price. BF’s dad bought it in Chicago.

It really is a game changer, or perhaps more accurately, the Model 3 will be a game changer, and fwiw, I don’t mind my money subsidizing the development of the Model 3.

To provide some background: I am in my mid 60s. I loved my first car at 16, a used VW bug, because it represented independence. I pretty much liked a Mercedes I bought 30 years ago, because it was comfortable and capable. I didn’t care much about any of the other cars I’ve owned, until the Tesla. I’ve had it nearly a year, and it amazes me every day. I’m proud to be a tiny part of moving transportation forward.

Tesla just opened a new store and service center in my village. I haven’t stopped it but it looks like they have a fair amount of inventory.

H is on the list for model 3. No stores within 250 miles but we are used to the long drive to anywhere.
We stood out in the middle of the night in the cold last year at said store to put a deposit down. Remember that?
We have solar panels and will add charger when it is time. Should be this year?

Yup, see them a lot. Saw two in the parking lot at my local grocery store today.

I know two people with Teslas, one of them was a client. In fact we enlarged his 1920s garage for it. The second is one of my least favorite contractors. (He does okay work, I just really dislike working with him.)

Yeah - not so common near me. We get all excited when we see one.

We have two neighbors that have them- I see them when I drive to work. There are a few others around town. I like the streamlined design of the back of the cars (that’s the view I usually have) and the symbol/logo.
