How does a parent teach moderation with regards to sexuality though?

What was the post about not doing more than one vice a t a time? No drinking while driving. No sex while drinking. No drinking and doing drugs. It was inspirational. No sex while driving was in there too, I think.

It is gossmom’s post 23.

Family… I am a nurse. I tell my kid real horror stories about irresponsible behavior. And I do not kid myself into thinking he will obstain. We have honest discussions.

As I mentioned previously,he is also financially motivated. So I showed him how much a paternity test costs…

Just use condoms. :)

Mspearl, two to be safe. We call that double gloving.

Unfortunately, condoms don’t protect as well as we might think.

I need to check with D to make sure she finished series of shots.

Sixties hippie here. Went to Woodstock. Need I say more? Neither of my kids are as adventurous as I was, and I had many examples of failed lives to point to. But I treasure my past as well. I stressed things one can’t recover from: drinkingand driving, unprotected sex, and additive substances, which doesn’t include alcohol in our family.)

Both have graduated from college, and both adhered to those boundaries.

However, both had some wilding experiences. As painful as it is to watch go through faintly self-destructive behaviors the learning process is part of who they’ve become.

A was addicted to a very toxic GF’S, much more dangerous than the weed they smoked, and D became addicted to expensiveNYC life, but she is over that too, although ideally she’d like to go back.

Both are responsible, fairly frugal and in good graduate programs in flexible fields that are perfect for them.

On a side note, I think it should be off limits to comment on a young woman’s weight. Parental control over food intake at this stage can lead to both obesity and anorexia. A lot of obesity is actually the result of too much early dieting.

Encourage exercise and let it go.

Both of my kids are slim and fit, and D doesn’t weigh more than she did in high school. S weighs about 10 pound more, but that was to be expected as he grew from a boy to a man.

My mother’s obsessions over my weight has had disaster pus results.

Well I think if you wear two condoms you will be fine. I am also a nurse and have, on occasion, worn 3 gloves.

Mythmom, the weight thing is tricky. It is important to teach kids to eat properly too. And that is done by eexmple, and what you put on the table. Ignoring the causes of overweight young children (I am talking 4 and 5 year olds) is also disasterous. You have to find moderation at that age…

Alcohol kills the germs. Actually, there’s a study somebody did that showed the germs from the pastor’s hands when he breaks and distributes the bread far outnumber those from the common cup. But in either case, I’m sure the effect is quite moderate, especially if the pastor is a religious hand washer.

RReligious hand washer? Does that include soap and water, or prayer only?

Clines: I thought that went without saying. We were talking about college age kids.

My own kids were vegetarians till ten and never ate sugar till they went to preschool.

I understood that, mythmom. But there are parents that ignore the diet and food issues until it becomes a social issue for their child…usually in their teens.

V lines: sorry about the auto-correct.

Well if this thread is going to deteriorate into a hatred of fat, I’m out. I wish some of you could meet my dying anorexic students. I’m a cOllege professor and have lost students to anorexia. Never list one to far. And yes, I know that in the long run fat is unhealthy, but we are talking about 18 year olds, and for them, anorexia really is a killer.
