The website says the interview isnt guaranteed, but just based on knowledge and past experience, do you all know IF or when I would get an interview offer? Or did I severely damage my chances since it is on a "first come first serve basis"?

It all depends on the amount of interviewers near where you live. My understanding is that it is first come, first serve, but that only matters in areas where the amount of interviewers is limited. E.g. if youre from Alaska and you apply weeks before the deadline you may not receive one. Likewise, if you apply 3 weeks after the deadline and live near Duke you will probably get an interview.

I submitted at about 9:40pm Pacific Time, so it registered as 12/11/09... Will this count or no?

The answer is maybe, haha.

Yeah, you will most likely get one. As long as you meet the deadline, you're in the running to get an interview. I submitted mine 45 minutes before the deadline and got an interview, although I live in an area with relatively few Duke applicants.

^right, but 9:43 west coast time is 12:43am (Dec. 11th EST), so I'm worried I submitted early for nothing.

I submitted mine like three weeks after the interview deadline for early decision, but I still had one. I think this is partly due to my location, though.

Out of curiosity, why does everyone want an interview so badly? I was under the impression they made next to no impact on admissions decisions.

I didn't even sign up for an interview. It turned out one of my 9th grade teachers was a duke alum and she was willing to give me an interview so I got one. Even if you apply just before the deadline or after possibly, theres a good chance that an alum lives near you and would be happy to interview you.

I want an interview because although it doesn't really impact admissions, I see myself as a social person, who not only can work with books and calculators, but people as well.

not sure how applicable this is, but i submitted my ED common app 5 minutes before it was due...and got in

Wondering when you know you're going to get an interview, and how do yo uknow if there's a Duke alumni near you?

If you submitted your application before the deadline you'll most likely be contacted for one, provided you live within a reasonable distance from where one of the AAAC committees is centered (Committees are run by alumni, so there are alumni in many towns and cities which receive information on applicants and are responsible for passing this on to local interviewers). When I receive information on students to interview, it has the exact date the application was submitted, so they do keep track it and use this information to assign interviews.

If you do not hear within a few weeks, you could always contact admissions, but keep in mind interviews are not mandatory, are meant to be just as informative for you as they are for Duke, and, as stated previously, it may just be a matter of supply and demand in your area. Also, interviews are not due to be submitted until February, so you have some time until you may be contacted.

so if i handed in the supplement yesterday... i might still have a chance for an interview? i live in central nj...probs not right?

There are 8 local "areas" in New Jersey...just depends on the ratio of applicants vs. interviewers. You may get one, or you may not.
