Just when you thought humanity couldn't get any worse

In today’s news, a nursery worker stabs 3 infants, plus 2 adults that I assume were trying to protect the children:

What is wrong with people?

Sadly, never underestimate man’s inhumanity to their fellow man.

While horrific, thank everything it was a blade and not a gun. We’d likely have nearly a dozen dead bodies rather than a handful of people in stable condition at the hospital.

I saw that as well, did anyone else think though that what was a 3 day old, plus a 3 week old and a one month old infant doing in day care at that age? So sad that many new mother’s get no maternity leave and feel forced back to work just to make ends meet. The actual crime aside, unlicensed daycare that would accept children this young is also wrong. Also wrong if used as a location for people to come into US simply to give birth and gain citizenship.

That’s horrific.

3 days old? What? And what does this mean?

It is not unusual for mother’s from foreign countries to come to the US to give birth and then head back to their home country. This is so the child will have dual citizenship, which the parents believe with be beneficial to the child in the future. Usually, they have a family member or friend that will host them until the delivery; many come without their husbands. In our practice, the parents could afford the travel.

Most go back home once the baby can get their passport, which came be done in a matter of weeks. We had patients leave before their 6 week postpartum visit. Some will try to get emergency Medicaid to cover the prenatal care and delivery. Even it they can not get Medicaid, they leave the country without paying. Most practice will require payment upfront to avoid being taken advantage of. Unfortunately, for those that do not receive prenatal care and just show up in the ER in labor, the hospital eats the cost.

Presumably US citizenship explicitly, instead of or in addition to other citizenship that the kid would get on birth.

Estimates of birth tourism in the US range from 7,000 to 40,000 annually, out of about 4,300,000 births in the US annually.

I just watched the movie Spotlight. Just say’n…

There are a number of these facilities for Chinese in New York, especially in Queens. While this is an old news story it gives you an idea of what is going on. https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Lure-of-Citizenship-Spawns-Birth-Tourism-in-NYC-121223264.html

Another wrinkle in America’s completely wackadoodle immigration realities. And while hundreds (often rich) Russian and Chinese come here with prospects of an anchor baby, sometimes at taxpayer expense, we go after poor families who come here because they want to WORK at often exploitative wages… what a mess this all is. What cynicism and hypocrisy…

The first thought after how horrible was, how very sad that three babies less than a month old were in a daycare facility and their mothers who recently delivered were already back at work. Awful. I’ve seen conflicting reports on the anchor baby opinion in this particular instance.

@alwaysamom that was my first reaction also, but I think this place actually housed the moms as well, or at least some.

@alwaysamom -

These moms were not back at work already. They are non-citizens who came to the US to have an American baby. The babies are innocents and it is a tragedy that this woman apparently snapped and attacked them. My good friend is a psychiatrist at the hospital that the stabber is at but I can’t ask her about it because of HIPAA.

This place is just blocks from where my H grew up and where his mom still lives. Kind of ironic in that my MIL was herself an anchor baby when she was born in the 1920’s. Her mother was brought to the US in her 8th month of pregnancy to give birth to my MIL (H’s grandfather was a steamship captain). The family then returned to Germany and when Hitler came into power, they were able to leave and come back to the US. Needless to say, I have very mixed feelings about the anchor baby thing but I will say that I don’t see Americans rushing off to Russia and China to have babies with dual Russian or Chinese citizenship.

My mom was pregnant when my parents moved to an Asian country and I was born there. No dual citizenship possible though, that country only offered it to those of that ethnicity. Ah well, anchor baby fail…

Not every country has birthright citizenship. My German friends were surprised that my oldest who was born in Germany had no right to be a German citizen. I’ve got mixed feelings about birthright citizenship - obviously it can be abused - but the children of Turkish guestworkers had no rights to citizenship just like the Dreamers here.

@katliamom broken system indeed that ANY FOREIGN child born on US soil is automatically a citizen Rich or Poor because both do it on purpose.

One group in higher numbers with a higher burden on tax payers.

Maby countries, developed and developing, do not grant birth right citizenships. US does.

Unfortunately, many take advantage of the US’s generous system. When there are companies doing business for this, the system is not working as it is intended.

I get coming to another country for medical care that is not as advanced in your home country. I even understand people going to other countries for surgery because it is cheaper, although not something I would every consider doing! Maybe just a bit do I understand coming to the US to have a baby so he/she will be a US citizen; what I can not wrap my head around is how many companies make this a business. Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised as there will always be someone willing to pay, whether it is legal or not.

I thought it was interesting the patients we had come to our small practice would come to the US to deliver. Each had a story for why they chose to deliver in our town. While they had the money, I wonder if they would have gone with one of these companies instead of staying with a relative; I would guess not as I bet they knew that option existed. We had several from Egypt (one would refer the next.) Each left as soon as they had a passport for the baby. These mothers only came for the citizenship as they had excellent prenatal care and records when they arrived; usually getting that to us before we would accept them as a patient. I was quite impressed with the level of care in Egypt each received; their records looked like royal documents!
