Keep an Open Mind!

It’s that time of year the ED 1 starts hitting and hopes and dreams are dashed. I’m just here to remind you to keep an open mind. My daughter got deferred ED1 by BC last year. She spent 4 years of her life doing everything possible to gain admission there. She would have been fabulous there, don’t get me wrong, and 10 years ago I think she would have gotten in no problem based on prior stats. It is a different world right now with highly selective schools being test optional and the amount of apps received. At the end of the day she was waitlisted in RD, which is a polite no.

The kind of students who do ED1 are typically motivated super stars. You will be a good fit at many many other places. Keep an open mind if this week doesn’t go your way. My daughter was a realist and KNEW 100% BC was a super long shot, even with incredible leadership, community engagement, high academics and all the things that should have gotten her in. She had several working back up plans and had them all pro and conned out. When one door closes it opened anther door.

She applied to SU not sure we could afford it. We were fairly certain she could get in and get in she most certainly did ED 2 as a dual major Newhouse and Whitman. Money still looked like it wasn’t there until they got ahold of her in late March to let her know they wanted her to apply to another special scholarship. That scholarship was based on leadership and community service, where she shined. While one school deferred her, another was trying to help her find a way to attend. One school rejected her and another built her up. Go where you are celebrated I say!

Thus far her experience at SU has been a land of opportunity. SU is a place where “doers” thrive and she is already done some impressive things in just 13 weeks. Tour guide, Acapella, clubs, connected with professors, met other kids just like her and isn’t just surviving, she is thriving.

One year ago she was sad about BC, NOW she is feeling so grateful she is at SU. Her Linked in kicks already from things they have had her do. She was meant to be there and Forever Orange is something that I have learned about that I think will be her!

If your door closes this week, look for the doors being thrown open for you and for the people that are ready to welcome you, celebrate you, and build you up. My daughter has said the universe wanted this for her. I can not disagree!

Great advice. There are many great schools out there. It is competitive in the highest order now with test scores being optional and “grade inflation”.

I think this is a lot of schools, not just SU (my alma mater).

I give credit to your daughter - it’s more likely she that is creating the success. The schools just create the opportunity to do so.

Some take advantage (your daughter) and some don’t.

Congrats to her - sounds like she’ll be another successful SU alum and that we got a good one.

Thank you, I agree with that 100%. There are so many fantastic schools out there. A couple really stood out, that is for sure. She found her fit by being open minded and not letting the ED 1 round define her. Shake it off!

Beautiful post and an important message.

It’s so sad when you see kids in August trudge off to a great college acting like they’ve been sentenced to 4 years of hard labor, living on bread and water, because they didn’t get in to their ED school and they are still pining for “what might have been”.

Your D sounds FANTASTIC!

Thank you. She has taught me a lot and I am blessed to be her mom. You are right, so many will let the ED let down ruin the rest of their senior year or sour their college beginning. She often sends me photos of her favorite libraries campus view and lets me know how grateful she is that she gets to go there. I’m like " you did that girl!"

Sorry I know what BC stands for (Boston College).
But which school is SU?

My son graduates from SU in the spring. He went into Newhouse wanting broadcast journalism. Realized it wasn’t for him and pivoted to Finance.
Great support, amazing school spirit and plenty of good job prospects

After just 15 weeks she has a beautiful Linked in, micro credentials, excel certified and a kick but business suit that she has worn to functions. That kind of engagement in your major fall of freshmen year means they are serious in getting you ready for the job market. I now have SU school spirit…LOL. Can I become an honorary alum? I am so happy she made the choice she did.
