It’s that time of year the ED 1 starts hitting and hopes and dreams are dashed. I’m just here to remind you to keep an open mind. My daughter got deferred ED1 by BC last year. She spent 4 years of her life doing everything possible to gain admission there. She would have been fabulous there, don’t get me wrong, and 10 years ago I think she would have gotten in no problem based on prior stats. It is a different world right now with highly selective schools being test optional and the amount of apps received. At the end of the day she was waitlisted in RD, which is a polite no.
The kind of students who do ED1 are typically motivated super stars. You will be a good fit at many many other places. Keep an open mind if this week doesn’t go your way. My daughter was a realist and KNEW 100% BC was a super long shot, even with incredible leadership, community engagement, high academics and all the things that should have gotten her in. She had several working back up plans and had them all pro and conned out. When one door closes it opened anther door.
She applied to SU not sure we could afford it. We were fairly certain she could get in and get in she most certainly did ED 2 as a dual major Newhouse and Whitman. Money still looked like it wasn’t there until they got ahold of her in late March to let her know they wanted her to apply to another special scholarship. That scholarship was based on leadership and community service, where she shined. While one school deferred her, another was trying to help her find a way to attend. One school rejected her and another built her up. Go where you are celebrated I say!
Thus far her experience at SU has been a land of opportunity. SU is a place where “doers” thrive and she is already done some impressive things in just 13 weeks. Tour guide, Acapella, clubs, connected with professors, met other kids just like her and isn’t just surviving, she is thriving.
One year ago she was sad about BC, NOW she is feeling so grateful she is at SU. Her Linked in kicks already from things they have had her do. She was meant to be there and Forever Orange is something that I have learned about that I think will be her!
If your door closes this week, look for the doors being thrown open for you and for the people that are ready to welcome you, celebrate you, and build you up. My daughter has said the universe wanted this for her. I can not disagree!
