Kid vs. Adult - Your Favorite Ice Cream/Frozen Treat

My summer job for a few years in high school was at the local town dairy that made its own ice cream (and other dairy goods). The stand out flavor then of people “our age” especially was butter pecan. Just the perfect balance of sweet and salty with LOTS of pecans.

That was one of the coveted town jobs because you got to see so many people even when you were working!

@abasket I thinks it’s kind of funny about the butter pecan. When I was growing up they seemed to be a flavor all of the adults raved about and all of the kids hated.

I still remember when my dear FIL saw cookie dough ice cream at our house and called it a “ weird flavor “. :joy:

lol so true! Maple walnut was another one that seemed reserved for the 50+ crowd.

For one brief shining moment, my middle school offered inside out ice cream sandwiches: chocolate ice cream surrounded by vanilla biscuits.

In Ithaca: Purity Ice Cream is always a stop!

As a kid chocolate in the neopolitan ice cream container. As an adult anything Talenti Gelato sells.

When I was little I’d always get maple nut goodies from the candy store, because no one else liked them so I didn’t have to share!

The memories and connections in this thread! I just recently bought Klondike bars, on sale, for the first time in decades. Reese’s version - yum! Also noted they were smaller. As a kid I loved Dairy Queen Buster Bars - summertime walking to the nearby Dairy Queen with my allowance money. When the Good Humor truck was in the neighborhood or at the town pool it was the strawberry shortcake bar. My Mom loved butter pecan and it makes me think of going with her to her favorite shop to get a scoop after dinner in the summer. Friendly’s was a teen hangout - mint chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge sauce and whipped cream.

As an adult I eat a lot of ice cream in June and July and then am fine without it for the rest of the year, except when on vacation I look for local ice cream shops. My choices now are usually budget restricted but when there are sales I get Dove Magnum bars and Mayfield brand ice cream moose tracks, cookie dough or mint chocolate chip.

When we had good humor, it was either the chocolate eclair bar with the chocolate bare in the center, or the small sundae cup with bittersweet chocolate. It came with vanilla ice cream which I am not a fan of, but swirling it with the bittersweet chocolate sauce was yummy!

Does anyone else still have an ice cream truck that comes through the neighborhood? We do.

My husband’s business has the ice cream truck visit every couple weeks in the summer for the employees.

We do. I’ve managed to restrain myself this summer. I made root beer floats for July 4th desserts - Abita root beer and homemade cardamom ice cream at H’s request. A fun treat!

Smiley’s has an ice cream truck - that is a heck of a treat to be at a party when the truck is there!

I went to Dairy Queen tonight. I blame this thread!

It was awesome! Had a small hot fudge sundae.

I hear one in the neighborhood. To be honest, I bet my kids didn’t have “the ice cream truck” more than 3x in their youth. We called it “the rip off man”. I would let them each buy a whole container/box of ice cream before we’d buy from that truck.

Kid - Friendly’s peanut butter cup sundae but with cookies and cream ice cream.

Adult - Jeni’s (any flavor) or Van Leeuwen’s pistachio.

As a kid: sundaes with double chocolate, and strawberry

Now: “Founder’s Favorite” from Cold Stone.

This thread has inspired me to go get some from Cold Stone right now!

Looking up a video on Youtube, that’s the Friendly’s product I was thinking of. I haven’t had one in decades. Unfortunately, Friendly’s restaurant is only on east coast, and supermarkets in my region do not carry the brand.

Oh gosh yes. But until last year it was the creepiest thing ever. Pepto pink, Half rusted and the creepiest sounding music. It looked like something straight out of a horror movie. It broke down and was in a garage for a long time and now there is a newer one.

I had a picture of it in the garage. Let’s see if I still have it, though I know it doesn’t do it justice.

We just grabbed a few scoops from Hoffmans in Spring Lake NJ. Sunday is Octopus Challenge night.

Lots of attempts but only one winner. In the spirit of CC, he is an offensive lineman at Lehigh and to prove himself worthy he had an extra scope “for dessert”
