I will NEVER set foot in a Kohls store again…not ever.
Today I decided to get a new shower curtain and rugs for my hall bathroom. So I went to Kohls. I found a $39.99 shower curtain I liked. Rugs were “on sale” $39.99 for the first rug, second half price. For bathroom rugs. Anyway…I liked them. I have always gotten 15% off at the register…even without my coupon. So I had a bill of about $100 and figured I’d save $15. No a good buy by any means, but I liked what I had.
Well…the register clerk says they no longer give discounts at the register without the coupons. So, I left all,the stuff sitting there…and left the store.
On to Marshall’s where I found a really nice Tahari shower curtain for $14.99. Two matching rugs for 19.99 (for both of them…not each). And I got a clear shower curtain liner. All for about $43. And you know…I like this shower curtain and rugs better than the Kohls marked up crap anyway.
Interesting. I just shopped at Kohl’s last week and had a 15 percent off coupon. They gave me 20 percent off because the friends and family promotion was going on. Maybe it depends on the store or the cashier. I go back and forth with liking and not liking Kohl’s. Like most places it depends what you are buying. I have 30 percent off starting next week and Kohl’s cash so I will be back.
I stopped going to kohls after I had several bad experiences with returns.
I never take off the tags when I buy items for someone else, so with my receipts, I tried to return an item that I had given as a baby gift. They said that because it was no longer in season they would refund the current sales price. We’re talking like 2 months.
Last straw was brand new Levi’s for my son that didn’t fit in length. They had a special shipment of 501s. I paid about $33. Brought back pants about 1 ½ months later, and the refund was $4. It was a special sale so they couldn’t refund/ exchange the price without a receipt. I ended up donating the pants to a shelter and they were able to sell them for more.
I don’t go to Kohls because of the whole coupon debacle. Just list the fair price. That, and the fact that ours looks like a garage sale lot on Sunday afternoon.
I more or less stopped shopping at Kohls for years, for various reasons (except occasionally with 30% off, when they gave you 30% off everything). Just recently, I orderd a total of 5 comforters, and took 4 back. It was actually an Ok experience. I gave them my card, and didn’t even need the receipt. I have recently heard ads that there’s no time limit on returns for Kohls. So I’ve thought of shopping there again. But maybe not. I guess Macys is the store I will continue to frequent, even though it drives me nuts.
I returned some tennis shoes that I had bought in Oct and never worn a couple of weeks ago. They no longer carry them, gave me full price as per my receipt.
DS1 and I went last weekend for the 70% clearance to see what he could find for work. He made a killing. Bought a pair of dress slacks, eight shirts and bought me a hoodie for $112, including tax. I only get stuff on sale there. Now, he’s got $20 in Kohl’s cash he’ll use tomorrow on something else.
The 3 Kohls I use are very easy to do returns–quick and no hassle. I always have my receipt, but have probably bordered on a 2 month return time before.
I hate the coupon gimmicks and really really hate the disheveled garage sale appearance in clothes and shoes. Not a fan but I’m sure I’ll be in there again.
I’m surprised, Thumper. Whenever I forget my coupons, at the register I always ask “Do you have any coupons in the store today?” And they always do. Just last week they had a 20%-er there.
Can’t say that Kohl’s is my favorite lately…but haven’t had trouble in the coupon department…
I’m annoyed with Kohl’s but I did find some amazing deals on Black Friday last year. If they have similar good offerings online, I’ll shop again (but only online).
D and I shop at Kohls fairly regularly. I have never had a returns issue, even months later - as long as I have the receipt, they will give full refund. I take great care to not lose those receipts! On the other hand, I tried to return a skirt I had bought for my D at The Loft 65 days prior - WITH receipt - and they wouldn’t take it back at all, no store credit, nothing. The reason was that it was purchased on “final markdown”, but that wasn’t evident at all (no bright red or orange tags or signs). That really ticked me off, because I spent way more than a few “final clearance” dollars for the skirt.
no DrGoogle. Kohls is a regular department store, that seems to think people don’t know the difference between a good deal, and crazy discounts on overpriced goods, that they then make you play coupon games just to bring them back to a realistic price. Marshall’s sells at discounted prices without games. We call it Kohls math.
I think a store has a right to insist you have a coupon and you have the right to leave the items with them if they won’t give you the deal without the coupon. The last time I was at Fairway (small grocery store chain) they had an amazing deal on blueberries for people who were emailed coupons. We’re supposed to be on the list, but we didn’t get a coupon. We left the five boxes of blueberries with the cashier. Their loss. Someone else got to lug them back to the produce section.
Our local Marshall’s is such a mess I rarely shop there. It’s next door to a Bed, Bath and Beyond and in the same building as a Target, so sometimes I’ll check out all three, but I hate the Marshall’s.
Why do people think it is ok to return something months later when the store no longer carries the item or it is out of season? What would the store do with it? The only thing they could do would be to sell it at a deep discount or just throw it away. People like to think the loss is absorbed by this large retail store, when in fact it is paid by other consumers.
I have no issue with Kohls return policy…(LLBean takes returns forever!). I am just annoyed with their ever changing policies regarding their coupons and their availability…and use. You used to be able to use them for Keurig and Keirig products. No more. Many of the electronics are excluded as well. All Nike products are excluded as well.
And they used to give 15% off all the time if you asked.
You know, their merchandise isn’t all that terrific. The stuff I got at Marshall’s was way nicer and better quality than the stuff I originally picked out at kohls.
The margins on electronics are razor thin - with a coupon the gross margin would be negative.
While vendors cannot dictate price, they can withhold gross margin assistance at the end of the season. That’s why brands that “never” go on sale are often excluded from coupons. If you’ve ever looked at Macy’s exclusion list, OMG.
