@InigoMontoya (BTW love the name) I don’t think all coupons are bad, I just think kohls really plays the game too much. At other stores, the retail price is list sure, but it is not above list, counting on the consumer to have a coupon to bring it back down to what it should be.
I am cheap and like a bargain, so it irks me to know if I have only peeled a 20% off and someone next to me has the 30%, that they are getting the same thing as me, but paying less.
I like that I can use their coupons on Levi’s for my boys. Macy’s excludes Levi’s on their coupons. I got an amazing deal on-line at kohls last November. I ended up pay $20 for Levi’s with their buy one get one free and an extra 30% off.
I looked online and see nowhere that you can’t use the percent off coupons on a fitbit or electronics in general as I was told over the phone. It also can’t be due to the manufacturer since it’s sold elsewhere cheaper. I see no reason to pay Kohls more for the fitbit, plus sales tax and have it take much, much longer to ship. The only reason I would have purchased it at Kohls would have been if I had been able to use the coupon. If Kohls thinks this will help their bottom line, I doubt it.

I agree, and I realized this is a pretty accurate description of how some colleges work their tuition, too!
But I just got some really cheap clearance stuff there (including a $4 fleece pullover and a $20 Northface knock-off fleece jacket that my D actually wears), so I’m still a Kohl’s shopper.
When JC Penney came out with the new lower price scheme, I called it. I said it would fail. Why?, Because we, who shop at these stores, “like” the 25-50-% off. Even if we know it is marked up. Sure there are people who have no time for that but most people shop the sales and some are very good at it. The JCPenney prices were not that much lower and all I kept thinking is this $50 shirt could be $35 with a coupon and I would leave.
I think Kohl’s will be ok as long as they don’t go the Macy’s route. I find that I now go to Lord and Taylor instead of Macy’s because they still honor coupons on brand names. I recently compared the same Calvin Klein dress at both stores and saved $30 by buying it at Lord and Taylor. Bed Bath and Beyond also stopped accepting coupons on Dyson and other brands years ago but you can still use the coupon on many other things.
Getting the best price is part of the hunt for many.
When Kohls first opened, I liked them for some things. I found them good for household items, and sometimes gifts. Over the years, their merchandise has really gone down hill, in my opinion. Last time I was there, I had a $50 gift card, and a 30% off coupon. After walking around for well over an hour, I gave both to my friend who needed new underwear.
The only thing I look for at Kohls now is baby clothes gifts in the clearance section. Usually I find great markdowns for presents. But even those have gone down hill…and have gone up price.
There is really no reason for me to shop at Kohls most of the time…so I don’t. Much of what they sell in housewares and appliances can be purchased less expensively at BBB with a 20% off coupon. So…I do that.
I used to shop more at Kohl’s a few years ago when they were “new” to the area - and when my kids were still in kids or junior clothes. I rarely go anymore. But I do always pull off the % sticker at home to see what I got - if it’s %15, I just toss it - if I go into the store, I’d just take one of the register scratch offs - it won’t be less than 15%!!!
I used to do the same thing. Last time I went, rather than giving me a new chance at the register the cashier simply said she had a 15% one that she could use. Either they were out of them or realized that is what people were doing.
And I love Macy’s. I moved to an area without one (yes, they do exist) and any time I shopped at one or ordered online, I’d get a survey that asked what would make me shop at Macy’s more, and every time I said ‘More coupons, and a STORE in my area.’ The coupon complaining worked and I was back on the list. Still no store.
Those exclusions Runswithscissors posted must be new. I know I have used the percent off coupons for electric toothbrushes, vacuums and Keurig cups. I can see that Kohls is going to lose a lot of business this way. I’ve been a loyal customer for years but not loyal enough to pay more to shop there when I can buy it on Amazon from the warmth of my study with free shipping no taxes and delivered in two days. Nope. Kohls is out.
I think for me, it’s a matter of convenience. It’s the closest clothing store to my house. I’ll only shop there if I have the 30% off coupon and even then, I will only buy something if it’s on sale. Also, they carry Dockers pants, which actually fit me and if I don’t like something their return policy is easy. Bed, Bath and Beyond and Macy’s are a distance away. The people that work there are nice. I’m never going to pay the sticker price so having it marked up, just to mark it down doesn’t bug me that much. I know the game, everyone that shops there knows it, so it’s no big deal.
I think majority of items in Kohls are overpriced (their so-called original price), you can definitely find similar items in other stores at a cheaper price. I mostly buy their “clearance” items, with the yellow tag, plus my 20% or 30% coupon, understanding that I may not find things in my size or things I need on clearance, but when I do, I am happy. I also love the easy return policy.
We have 2 Kohls close by, so it is convenient, I stopped by today to return something, and picked up 2 men’s tie for my son, clearance price $4 (originally over $30), final price at $2.80 each after 30% coupon, he likes them!!!
For home items and some personal care items, I like to go to Bed Bath and Beyond. They are extremely liberal about their coupons and honor them regardless of when the expiration date is. They also have a do it yourself gift wrap counter there that is free of charge. I also love that the one near us is not in a mall and I can just run in and out. I do wish they would get a better selection of rugs, lamps and throw pillows.
