Hi I’m Korean-Canadian in canada. if i have canadian citizenship, can i take Korean for SATII?

well u r korean so wouldn’t it seem obvious that u would get a 800? i say keep ur money and time and use it for something worthy.

Oh I was wondering, because I’ve heard of this guy from US who is Korean with US permanent resident and he took Korean for SAT II so i assumed I might be able to as well… o_OThen can someone explain to me how he was able to ? I don’t know him personally, I’ve just heard of him. Thanks.

u can but it won’t be anything useful to u. It will not help u at all in admissions game.

OH I see what you mean lol thank you :)

is anyone from vancouver? :D

Hey to all Koreans. I live in California and I’m currently attending UCSD. Glad to meet you all.

Don’t take it. It works against you. Adcoms from Duke, yale, and couple of others came for a conference thing here and they said that it makes applicants look ‘stupid’ (yes. they said the word stupid)

well i dont know about the students living in s. korea but in my case I ve been living in u.s. for 5-6 years and taking the test sort of “proved” that I was fluent in korean so it was great for me. it definitely was one of the factors that got me in to stanford so… but i guess if u lived ur whole life in korea then i guess it’s not necessary.

so if i lived 9 years (me 17 right now) in the states taking the test would loook good?

Alright so here is basically my life story. Born in Kwang Ju Korea, stayed there for 1 year, then moved to states for 9 years living in texas and massachusetts. Then I moved back to Korea for 2 years near Seoul, then I moved here to canada and its been about 5 years now.

The question is would taking the SAT II Korean still look stupid for me? I mean I really don’t consider myself a native speaker, and I’ve only lived 3 years of my life in Korea… When I was 1 years old and when I was in gr.4-5. Even my recent immagrint Korean friends think that I am defidently a Canadian-Korean.

Would adcoms take my SAT II Korean score as a joke? Just a note that I haven’t really taken any official school transcript Korean classes other than a bit of Korean class at church. Then again my school doesn’t offer Korean.

So fundamentally my question is… should I take the SAT II Korean?

And binsbts could u elaborate on how the SAT II Korean helped you get into Stanford?

okay since the application shows that you went to high school in u.s. and since you are not even a native speaker, you are showing that you are possibly tri-langual (since you must have taken a foreign language at high school)…it’s hard to show through your application that you are fluent in korean other than taking SAT II Korean.
So this is just what i think:
- adcoms look at your SAT II Korean score seriously if it can be the means to prove your fluency in korean. It’s always a plus if you do well on it.
- If you have a citizenship in south korea, then it might not be necessary because it’s possible that having the citizenship is a “proof” that you are fluent in korean. but if you feel unsure about that, then take the test.
- Say you are to choose between taking Korean and something else like Biology M, and you are sure you will do well on biology too (700+), then I say take Biology because it can be a bigger factor.
- but if you have nothing else to take, taking SAT II Korean is always a plus.

I guess it can look as a joke depending on how your application is made. It can be used to show that you are a fluent speaker but at the same time, it’s possible that it would look like you wasted your time just to put a high score on your app. one thing for sure is that if you can get a 800 on a test, take the test.

Cool. and btw I have Canadian citizenship… recently aquired.

Is the Korean SAT hard? I consider myself rusty on grammar but I am pretty good with reading comprehension and listening
