La Sierra or UCR or Claremont McKenna

Due to reasons beyond my control, I will have to live at home for college.
I want to do bio/premed.

1 is the best academically but also the hardest. Also, it’s better for government, econ, etc. than bio. But it has a good med school admit rate, although there are very few people applying so maybe that’s why.

Also, it’s the furthest and it is really not a commuter campus; I would be the only one probably. This would get exhausting and it would be hard to get involved in clubs. But wait! My family is willing to move near the school. I think this is a bit drastic and it would be unfair to my younger sibling who really doesn’t want to move. I don’t want us to move either. For some reason the move feels like a bad idea.

2 is worse academically but it would also be much easier. It’s a short commute which would free up time to volunteer at a nearby hospital (which I am already familiar with), for example. Also it has an unofficial relationship with a good local med school so chances of getting in there (where it would be nice to go) aren’t bad. Also we wouldn’t have to move which would be nice for all of us. To be honest, part of my reason against this school is just my ego (since I got into an Ivy as well). But if I can swallow my pride it might be ok. I’ve heard the environment isn’t as ‘intellectually-stimulating’ as others, but is that very important? My parents are of the opinion that mediocrity is just fine as long as you get where you need to be, and the easier the school, the better. If you have any pragmatic/practical arguments against this thinking, please share.

3… I don’t know how it compares with #2 for premed but it has about a 33% med school admit rate. However it’s large and I much prefer small schools to larger ones.

Which school is which? Your numbering system doesn’t correspond with the thread title as far as I can discern.

If you have to live at home, then money is probably tight. For that reason, choose whichever school will be the least expensive for you. (you didn’t mention financial aid offers)

I am not sure about your ordering system, but La Sierra is not in the same class at UCR, let alone CMC.

If its a money issue, you will be fine at UCR, especially for pre-med, but if you can afford CMC, (without loans over 20K over 4 yrs) then go for it.

Undecided – I know two of the psych professors at La Sierra from UCLA grad school days. I would suggest you call and speak with a couple of professors about your situation… you need first hand information before you decide to matriculate to a school that is really not on the map of most med school adcoms. Maybe it’s no problem… and maybe you’ve got a well paved road into Loma Linda med school, but you should really vet this before your final decision.

This is a repeat thread by someone who didnt like the answers the first time. What is going on here is a ridiculously overbearing set of parents who are beyond helicopter parents and wont let the student live on campus. Which is PRECISELY what this student needs to do. LIVE ON CAMPUS at Claremont.

Wait this is whatshouldido see the UCR vs Johns Hopkins thread. This kid has Claremont McKenna, UCLA, JHU, UCR and now Sierra among the options but has a overcontrolling parental issue.

I don’t know what La Sierra is. I’ve been a higher ed professional for 31 years, and colleges are my passion as well as my vocation, but this is a name I’ve never before even heard! I’ve heard of UC-Riverside, but there hardly seem like the kinds of schools that are usually competitors for students who get admitted at CMC. Your family is not willing to allow you to live at CMC but IS willing to move so that you can live closer to campus? This doesn’t compute.

CMC is a top ranked liberal arts.
UC Riverside is a 1st tier University offering PhD as highest degree.
La Sierra is a 3rd tier University offering Masters as highest degree.

If CMC offered you financial aid, go there. Otherside, UC Riverside.

Your personal issues with your clingy family need to be addressed separately from your choice of which college to attend.

seriously your parents have to let you go and be yourself. Your parents aren’t going to be with you all the time.

As of schools UCR is way better than sierra ( not sure of CMC) UCR is a research university and you’ll be able to do medical research and they have that new school of medicine

It is unhealthy for you if your family can afford to let you stay in the dorms and won’t. Talk to them and maybe get a high school counselor involved.

This thread should have ended back at UCR vs Hopkins.
