hello, i’m a junior looking primarily at lacs (e.g. nescacs) and i was wondering about their study abroad programs… is it relatively easy to enroll in them?

i am very interested in learning japanese so i want to spend at least 2 semesters abroad there. some of the japanese university i’d consider study abroad-ing are keio, waseda, sophia, aoyama etc.

thanks!

I believe it is quite easy to study abroad at most LACs. I know that the one I’ll be attending, it is certainly very possible. Middlebury, with such a strong focus on languages, would almost certainly offer plenty of study abroad. Even less selective LACs often use generous study abroad as a draw. I know that Goucher College prides itself in recently making Study abroad mandatory.
Finding colleges that would allow you to spend more than two semesters abroad may be difficult. I’m pretty sure Swat doesn’t. I just looked up Williams, and they have several (6) programs you can choose from in Japan, all of which span up to a full academic year.

You might want to look into the Associated Kyoto Program.

The AKP is sponsored by a consortium of American colleges and universities. The sponsoring institutions are: Amherst College, Bates College, Bucknell University, Carlton College, Connecticut College, Middlebury College, Mount Holyoke College, Oberlin College, Pomona College, Smith College, Wellesley College, Wesleyan University, Whitman College, and Williams College. The Program maintains high academic standards and dedication to a sound liberal education for which its sponsoring institutions are known.

The AKP is a two-semester program and all AKP students live with homestay families in the Kyoto area throughout the duration of the program.

I’m not sure about other schools, but Middlebury students frequently study abroad at Keio University, Nanzan University, and Sophia University.

oh wow. thanks guys! yeah i have heard about the AKP, and i’ll make sure to take a better look at it. middlebury seems to have the universities that i’m looking at. thanks again!

I’d recommend Dickinson College as well as a place to look into for languages and study abroad programs. I’m not sure what they offer in the way of Japanese, however, they have strong language and study abroad programs (some sort of study abroad is mandatory at Dickinson).

middlebury, wesleyan, conn college
