I like this idea as a gift, although perhaps not one that you’d unwrap in public. Particularly for young women who aspire to travel abroad, I have read that tampons can be very difficult to obtain in some countries. I admit to some curiosity, so if you do buy some for the young women in your life, check in to let us know how they were received.
One of my daughters has asked for a pair as a gift. Grandpa’s just going to have to deal with it! Pass the eggnog…
I think it’s a fine gift…but not unsolicited…and not for Christmas morning. Just my opinion.
And my kid DID live abroad in a third world country…for two years.
ETA…if they plan to travel abroad where tampons are not available, get them a Diva cup…but not as a Christmas present!
@thumper1 I have wondered about the logistics of emptying a Diva cup in a public bathroom, though. Could get messy. And no, I’m not asking you to get more explicit on a public forum.
You can bring tampons with you to foreign countries. Granted for a two year stay that would be a lot but for a semester or just a trip, no problem.
I gave my girls Thinx last year for Christmas. I knew they would like the concept and not buy them for themselves due to cost so it seemed like an appropriate gift among other things. It was appreciated and didn’t weird anyone out (okay maybe my 14 year old son but that was just a bonus). Of course we’ve always been pretty open about such things as a family and it was only the five of us in our immediate family opening gifts.
@mom23travelers So what are your girls’ reviews on the product?
What am I missing here? Don’t we have panty liners for those “heavier” days?
I would not want to walk around with any “spillage” all day. You can change a panty liner at any time during the day quite easily. Imagine you are not going to carry extra pairs of Thinx around.
These would have been so wonderful during my younger years! Some posters are lucky if they never had this issue. I could’ve saved a lot of clothes and bedsheets, and maybe have gotten some extra sleep too.
DIL gets a real hoot that my family buys “practical” Christmas gifts. This could take it to a whole another level
I probably wouldn’t give as a Christmas present in mixed company, but it’s the type of present I like to gift–things that make life easier, are pricey for young adults, and will be used. I’m going to see what she thinks about this.
“Imagine you are not going to carry extra pairs of Thinx around.” And if you are on the road and traveling, how do you deal with THAT in a public bathroom? Rhetorical question.
HImom thanks for this idea! If you type “Thinx” into Amazon search you find a whole assortment of these types of undies with reviews. I will buy some and give them to D privately, Santa doesn’t always have to make a big show of things…
Tampon angels? Period panties? As gifts?! Where is Miss Manners when you need her?
Ok. I will get and gift these to D as a separate gift privately but I think she will be delighted not to worry about more ruined clothing and sheets in the future. You folks who have not experienced the hassles and pain have NO idea how bad it is and how much dread some of us have borne for decades.
It doesn’t appear anyone has actual experience with any of these brands to share, which was what I had been hoping for! I know Thinx has gotten the lion’s share of the publicity but I’m not a theirs.
Here is the review on Thinx from me and my girls. It works way, way better than panty liners as a back up to tampons. The area of absorption is much greater. You just put on a clean pair in the morning and take it off at night. No need to change it during the day as all the spillage etc. that would have you changing your panty liner is just absorbed by the panties. It’s also great for busy days when you are expecting your period and you just want to not be worried about it. Or days you know it just might not be possible to get to the bathroom to change a tampon exactly when you want to.
It really does absorb a fair amount of liquid like magic.
This may be a TMI question…but how well do,these panties launder?
I believe with some brands, you’re supposed to pre-rinse in cold water before tossing it into the wash and with other, just put in the wash (cold water).
The directions for Thinx is exactly what @HImom says above. But I will tell you from personal experience that it has happened more than once that I kinda forgot about it and they went through the normal wash with out any sort of pre-rinse and I didn’t notice a single problem. And I’m willing to bet that’s what my college girls do with them since I know their laundry methods are simply to dump all clothing in one load. Surprisingly enough that has worked out well for both of them so far.
@HImom if you do try other brands please come back and update with your reviews. I’m certainly not wedded to Thinx for the future but I’m firmly in support of the concept.
I know some teacher friends who would love these. Long days with very short breaks can be rough on those with heavy periods.
