You might want to look at the Radisson at Fisherman’s Wharf. It was remodeled not too long ago and for a location, I prefer it to Union Square. They are both touristy, but nothing beats the water, IMO. I found Union Square a bit seedy when I was there a couple of years ago. At FW you can catch a boat to Sausalito, etc, trolley car to Chinatown, drive to wherever.

For a Chinese restaurant, walk around Chinatown and see where the Chinese are eating.
It never fails!

As far as skiing 4 days, I am really impressed. You must be in fabulous shape. Two days is tops for me or my kids (who are very athletic and young!).

Parent-
Usually we ski for a week. This is a shorter time on the slopes becaue you guys have no snow!! So alas, my cc buds convinced us (not hard to do) to spend time in the wine country.

Will use the free Hilton night probably at Union square. Free is free, eh xig?

“Hilton Union Square says it is under construction/renovation. Anyone know how much is going on?”

I don’t if there was construction, but I stayed during winter break and don’t remember noticing it.I will also be staying there in July, so let me know!

We’re getting rain today and it’s forecast for tomorrow as well, so that means there should be some more snow for you. It may even snow this weekend…

In honor of great conditions and anticipation of more snow, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are launching the new Tahoe Super 2 which offers two unrestricted days of skiing and riding at either resort for just $49 per day. Tahoe Super 2 has absolutely no date restrictions and is valid for any two days. BONUS - in addition to the great savings, Tahoe Super 2 pack holders will get to ski/ride any two Friday afternoons for FREE!

Of course this doesn’t pertain to jym, but this year there is a special season ski pass that is good at both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. That’s what my daughter has. She got it for free as a perk for her job. She’s coaching a college team (that xiggi would know well).

Jym, you had asked me if my D would be at Squaw this weekend and actually I now realize that this long weekend are the Regional Championships and so she is coaching the team at those and they are being held at Mammoth, the only weekend she is not in the Tahoe area.

Hi Soozie, what level are the championships? My daughter somehow ended up on her school’s ski team (and she’s not THAT good), and she’s talking about going up to Mammoth this weekend–she didn’t say anything about regional championships…
And Xiggi–I thought you’d gone to UG in Southern California, not Northern–I guess I missed that piece.

KathyC…in the USCSA collegiate racing…both varsity and club teams can participate. When my D was in UG school, and raced in USCSA, her college team was a varsity team. Last year, she coached that team in the East. This year, while in grad school, she is coaching a college’s UG ski team but it is a club team. They are in Regionals. She met this team who asked her to coach them this year, while she was at Nationals last year and so this team, even though it was club level, was in the Nationals. But here in the Northeast, in the league my D’s college raced in, only Varsity teams for ladies tend to make it to Nationals. But again a club team could make it particularly if their division is not as competitive. Like you say, to ski on a club team, you don’t HAVE to be that good as anyone can join the team, unlike a varsity team. The club team has a mix of true racers and some who are more hobby level. I don’t know what school your D attends or if she’ll be in these races this weekend but that’s where my D will be…but standing on the course and not racing in the course.

My D is in grad school at Berkeley but that is not the team she is coaching. She is coaching a team at a university that she got into for grad school but chose Berkeley over it. :D

Hi Soozie,
Thanks for the explanation–it sounds like what my daughter is doing is the club level, although her school has had some skiers at the Nationals during the three or four years. Her school is in Southern California.

KathyC, your information was and is correct. UG days were spent in SoCal looking at the beautiful mountain. SoozieVT’s tongue-in-cheek remark relates to graduate school. Suffice to say that it is doubtful that the D is not walking around Cal with her coaching jacket, even if it a beautiful one. :)

Hey Xiggi…she is supposed to get a coaching jacket actually but not sure if it has arrived yet. But you are right, that it would not be cool to wear it around Cal. Further, it would not be cool to wear her Berkeley sweatshirt at a ski race as they compete against the team she is coaching. But she often wears her own UG Ski team jacket…that is safe, at least in these western divisions!

So Xiggi, does that mean you’re up here in God’s country now? I can’t think of why else a Cal sweatshirt would bother you.

And Soozie, my daughter said that the Northern California schools were in a different region than the Southern, with Cal Poly on the dividing line to the Southern group. (Wouldn’t it be easier to get to Bear Valley or Kirkwood from San Luis as opposed to Mammoth–not a good drive!) (So Northern would be Cal/Davis/Sac. State/Stanford?)

And Jym, they’re still forecasting some more snow tomorrow and over the weekend…

I am not sure where God’s country starts or ends. I’d like to think I was born in God’s country as long as it is Texas. However, to keep it simple, I have been in Niners’ and Harvaugh’s country for a several years now. I can’t complain about the football or even the baseball. The slopes have been Tahoe’s for me, even when I was in Socal.

As far as the sweatshirt, I believe you read that wrong. I am not bothered by Cal’s shirts at all. My comment was about Soozie’s daughter not getting much love on HER campus were she she to stroll around in that ski jacket of the team she coaches. I have seen “them” jackets on the slopes, and they are/were beautiful.

PS This is the not the forum where I torture the Cal people. :)

I knew it! Given that I live in the “mysterious East Bay” (to quote Herb Caen), I certainly don’t bash Cal…

Jym, the most recent weather forecast is now backing off on snow predictions for this weekend, which should help–you’re coming in Saturday, correct?
