Can you guys suggest good Laptops suitable for students studying in the US? Should I get one in India or in the US? Price range - less than $1000(<INR 50k)

MAC, all of the kids are using macs. Two daughters with MACS-NY and Davis. You should be able to get a good student discount by waiting and buying it at the school bookstore and if you have a problem, you can get it fixed at the apple stores on-site. Plus, you don’t want the hassle of going on the flight with it. They have school prices with all of the companies.

^^True that. Also…Its major dependent…choose according to specific needs of the course you are taking…no point buying an AIR if you are going to be coding…all through college:)

Definitely get one in the US only. The price is often lower and you can get latest models earlier.

I agree with makboy.

Windows or MAC?

Do yu have money blowing out of your ass? If yes, go for a MAc which you’ll have to change in 2 years because of Moore’s Law. Or go for a Windows PC with higher specs that could last 4 years. Give Dell a miss they break down pretty often . But Lenovo/Sony/HP are all okay build quality wise. And its a misnomer that Macs dont break down. They “freeze” enough times if youre doing coding through tunnel. Which you might. Also, programs like Mathematica etc dont run very well on the Mac. But it is true Macs are more popular. Because theyre shiny, white and cool. Thats why :P

Agree with Sam, Mac is a big no if you are in budget. Go for HP’s APU based laptops as they have Better iGP, longer battery life, cheaper in cost.

If you have not bought a computer, then I would suggest go buy in US. The bookstore will offer a student discount, warranty will be covered, and in case of a problem you will just have to walk to the nearest store.

In terms of MAC or Windows, your budget will decide that.

As far as specifications are concerned, looking at RD Decision list I see you are heading to Trinity,CT. Therefore, the college recommended laptop specifications can be seen in this link

[Computing and Network](http://www.trincoll.edu/LITC/its/computing/Pages/default.aspx)

@anilalways Yeah I’m heading to Trinity and thanks for the link! :D

@sam you put it in a real nice way…“Money blowing out your ass” :D.
I for one have had a good experience with dell laptops. But I would still recommend a sony lappy. There is often a compatibility issue for several programs when it comes to MACs. And the entire way of working on a MAC is different. The key and mouse strokes produce different responses. So it has a learning curve.
Let the recommended specs guide you.

Anytime.

Congtulations and Good Luck.

I am sure you must be excited to leave home with a few apprehensions thrown in as well. And I am pretty sure your mom will be on one big emotional roller coaster ride right now.

Connecticut is a great State and Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria, some also call it World’s Best Pizza, New Haven,CT, established in 1925, is only 11 miles from your college. It is one of the oldest and best known pizzerias in the United States.

I lived in Stamford,CT for 2 years, ages ago. It is a beautiful place. Lovely in Fall when you will be starting college. It will look like a perfect picture postcard. Enjoy…

^^I agree, Connecticut is an absolutely beautiful state. Some of my best childhood memories were there. You’re going to love it.

I have nothing to contribute to this thread other than Dell laptops don’t last very long in terms of battery life. Then again, neither does Sony vaio.

There is no doubt that Macs are more expensive.

What I don’t like about Windows PCs is that after about two years of use and umpteen updates to OS and virus protection s/w, apps seem to slow down.

Another thing I don’t like about windows PCs is that best deals come bundled with hajaar bloatware and it is a huge hassle getting rid of them completely.

I have been using an older refurbished MacBook for over a year and I am quite happy with it. It is used mainly for documentation, browsing and such. I use Linux machines in the lab where I work for most of my CS programming assignments. Next time I will probably get a cheap (~$500) windows laptop and install Ubuntu or Mint.

Bloatware is an issue. Especially for a Sony
you can always pay 10$ and order the installation disc and do a clean install of windows. Takes a little patience. But Macs come with greater amount of bloatware. Except it has cutesy names like Garage Band and final cut :P

Sent from my F-074 using CC

Reinstalling the OS to get rid of an app is an interesting concept. It must be a lot less painful than mucking with regedit, right? :)

@anilalways thanks for the info! Are any Indian food stores or restaurants available nearby Trinity? Food seems to be the biggest issue concerning my mom right now. She keeps asking if there’s rice or Chapathi available at the College cafeteria!
XD

Yes there are many. In fact if this is your first time in US, you will be amazed at the Indian Diaspora presence there, more so in CT, New York, Boston, New Jersey. Food will not be a problem at all. The way you spelt ‘chapati’ i can guess you are a South Indian, there are some fantastic South Indian joints in NY that I know of.

And there are innumerable Indian grocery stores from Patels to some run by Pakistanis and the restuants run mostly by Bangladeshis. More often than not, even the malls will definitely have one Indian food outlet in the food court and even the Food stores will have an aisle specifically for Indian food, all kinds of pulses and spices and ready to eat - microwave stuff in the frozen food section as well.

If you google “Indian Grocery Stores near Trinity College,CT” it will open multiple links with relevant info,

<a href=“Google Maps”>Google Maps;

Similarly you can google for restruants as well.

Yeah I’m a South Indian!
And my Mom would be so happy to hear that there are plenty of Indian stores and restaurants in CT! :D

Good I am happy to see that huge smiley and I very sure your ma would be equally thrilled to know that food will not be an issue. Oh these Mothers…I am included in that category…
