We’ll be traveling to Philadelphia tomorrow to the Wells Fargo Center area. Any recommendations for a lunch spot with terrific steak-and-cheese sandwiches?? We are just simple new englanders looking for the traditional Philly sandwich before a Big East basketball game. Any suggestions?

If it makes a difference, I got one from a streetcar near all the historical stuff in Philly and I didn’t think it was particularly good. The meat was a bit burnt lol and the cheese was kinda weird, but I think that’s just the type of cheese they use in Philly.

You will be able to get a cheesesteak at concession stands inside the WF Center. There’s also Chickie & Petes, a sports bar not too far from the sports arenas. In fact, you will be able to get a cheesesteak at just about any pizza/sandwich restaurant in the area. Just don’t call it a " steak and cheese sandwich" !

Geno’s Steaks.

:o So sorry! :D

Instead of a cheesesteak, get the best Philly sandwich: roast pork, provolone, and broccoli rabe. It’s so much tastier!

Avoid Pat’s Cheesesteaks at all costs. Overpriced and over hyped. And the staff persons are rude and unbelievably impatient.

Seach Bobby Flay and see if you can find the shop he recommended. It was a mom and pop operation but I can’t remember the name.

Well, Geno’s and Pat’s are the landmark cheesesteak places. They are catty-corner (sp?) across from each other. DH and DS had the appetites to have one from each.

You might find the staff “rude and impatient” or you might find that it is part of the “atmosphere” - same idea as the waitresses in the old Durgin Park in Boston.

You can google both places for location/directions, and get a “primer” on how to order a cheesesteak - wit’ or wit’out (do not under any circumstances say “with” or “without”, lol). The “instructions” on how to order are also posted at Pat’s… and you’ll likely have time to read them while you are in line (moved fast when we were there).

These are no-nonsense, walk up to the window and order places, picnic tables for eating.

You can get a good cheesesteak lots of places. But over-hyped or not, there’s something to the idea of going to the “original”.

IMHO.

The “cheese” is really cheez-wiz, btw.

If you want a foodie’s cheesteak… with quality cheese etc… don’t go to these places. But if you want “the original”, give it a go.

“Nobody goes there anymore; they’re too crowded”

I have done numerous taste tests and still believe Pat’s is best. And certainly best for a first timer looking for the total experience.

We’re off! Thanks for all of your recommendations. Whiz, wit and mushrooms
!!

The ‘real’ Philly cheesesteak never had Cheese Whiz, at least the ‘real’ ones in South Jersey. Real Provolone, all the way.

I had one Geno’s and it was good, but the one I had at the cheesesteak place in the Philadelphia airport food court tasted even better to me.

Geno’s and Pat’s have to be two of the most overrated places I have ever eaten–along with Lexington BBQ. All three ended up half eaten and in the trash. There is another Philly place that many locals like better and it won a taste challenge with chef Simon I think. Tony Lukes. Have not been there yet. And yes, I am close to an expert on this.NJ has as many good places as Philly.

Good list:

barrons. I was totally disappointed in Tony Lukes…had the pork and brocolli rabe. I would like to try JOHNS for a sandwich. They got a nice write up for bbq pork.

I was also unimpresed with Genos. Better cheesesteaks at most hoagie shops.

Welcome to Philadelphia!

Philly+ most of the east coast from there to Boston.

We went to Philly last summer … we went to the Geno/Pat corner one day for lunch; the corner is pretty much in a residential neighborhood and the cheese steak was OK at best … we also went to Jim’s on South street (I think) which was better food in a much funkier neighborhood.
