Late season ski trip to Park City - Suggestions?

jym - It was great to meet you and the boys. In retrospect, you timed your trip well. Pretty good snow for late March/early April.

In a sense, you left just in time. Monday and Tuesday were insane. It rained most of the day Monday, then got cold and turned to snow around 4 pm. They closed I-80 westbound from Jeremy Ranch to SLC for several hours. Snowed all night Monday with vicious wind. Tuesday a.m. I awoke to the sound of the avalanche guns going off. Tuesday was the worst “snow day” we’ve ever had. Took us 2 hours to clear the driveway. 2-3 feet with drifts of 4-6. It’s pretty rough when he snow is higher than the snowblower.

It’s beautiful now. Deep snow everywhere. I’m going skiing tomorrow for the first time since my stroke. I’m a bit nervous, but trying to be brave.

Did you try the Lookout Cabin? I’m skiing The Canyons tommorow and hope to have lunch there, but I heard they’ve closed for the season. I hope you were able to catch them open.

Hope to see you in your neighborhood this summer!

Sherpa,
It was wonderful to meet you too, and again, I cannot thank you enough for your kindness. Awaiting the opportunity to return the favor if/when you make it to our fair city this summer. Hope your son is recovering well and quickly.

I’d heard about the additional snow dump of 2 feet, but not about the highway closing (note to MOWC-- see, it DOES happen!!!) or the rain in the valley. Everyone said, when we were there, that we had the best conditions of the year. Can’t complain!

We unfortunately did not make it to Lookout Cabin. We were on the opposite side of the mountain at lunchtime (I was chilling out a the base of Tombstone lift catching some rays), and had also read that they usually expect reservations. I did see it when I took the shortcut lift at the end of the day, and the cabin looked closed, but then again, it was the end of the day. We forgot to look at the photos the photographer took of the guys when they were skiing on 9990. I remember the roll number (602). Are they available for viewing on line?

God luck with the skiing!! How long has it been since you were on skis? I will tell you, falling in that powder is like falling into a cloud. The hardeest part was getting up! I took it pretty easy (I can’t turn easily in all that snow) but older s accidentally crashed into me, sending me and my skis flying in all directions. My H said it was an ugly crash-- I really dont recall it. All I recall (he hit me from behind-- I didnt even see him coming but apparently he anticipated that I would turn sooner than I did) was a “boom” and skis flying and tumbling. It coulda been ugly. Fortunately it wasn’t.

Be safe, and hope to see you in a few short months.

BTW, that new, inexperienced waiter forgot to give me the 1/2 off sushi discount!! I didnt realize it until the next day or so when we were paying for dinner at the sushi restaurant (something Dog-- I forget the name) in PC. Oh well…

Blind Dog Sushi? One of my favorites. Sorry you didn’t get to Lookout Cabin. The sushi tuna is fantastic. The view is great and you could probably sit on the porch with the weather you had. Did you get to go down Boa? That’s my favorite run and probably the least crowded. Since D is off to college this year, I’m hoping to ski more next year. Don’t have to try to coordinate school and skiing. BUT I WILL MISS HER. My H is not a very good skier and he RESTS a lot. He is at his best when we are eating.

Yes!! That was it!! Blind Dog Sushi!! Yum!! The Biggest problem though, - they sat us at the table RIGHT NEXT TO the counter with the jar of chocolate chip and macadamia nut cookies!! OK- so I decided Passover was over sooner than it was and ate several for dessert.

We also ended up at the Wasatch Brew Pub on Thursday night- not only was the food and beer yummy (fresh trout was quite good), but Thurs night is billiards contest night, which kept the boys entertained, and they won Jagermeister hats.

I am finding, POTO mom, that after 40 yrs of skiing, my stamina is not what it used to be. Yes, I skiied boa-- it was beautiful. But long runs of ungroomed powder, while absolutely beautiful, are tiring! The boys had fun in the natural chutes – not for me. I did soem tree skiing, but that was “natural” enough for me. Had to duck under a few branches. When they headed to 9990, I headed to an adirondack chair!!

Where will your dau be in school next year? She’ll still get a spring break- and it was DEFINITELY thei time to ski!!

Maybe whe can ski together-- you can do the wild stuff with my H and I’ll take it slower with your H! Deal?

Wait, that didnt come out right, but I think you know what I mean!

You are TOOOO Funny. . . My D will either be at Eastman or Oberlin - long shot is Cincinnati COnservatory. I haven’t reserached when the spring breaks are. We went at Christmas this year and the snow wasn’t good yet. We had tons of auditions this year and senior recitals, etc. so we just didn’t feel good about spending more money to go skiing. I’ll keep you apprised of our schedule next year. I am sure we will go at some point during the winter/spring.

^^ Wow! Congrats on the Conservatories/School of music! You must have a talented dau. All we in our familly can play is the ipod :)

I expect (hope) that older s will be re-employed next ski season (his employer became a victim of the economy, sohe had some time on his hands) and I serioulsy doubt that younger s, even with our footing the bill for him to join us, will spend his spring break with dear ol’ mom and dad next year (do you hear that ds?? Start saving your pennies if you plan to cavort with your friends next spring) so it’ll probably just be us old geezers… and we are flexible (well, at least with respect to vacation schedule. Joints and muscles-- thats another story…)
