LAUNCH Summer Program 2014

Hey guys! This is just a thread for those applying to the above program taking place next summer. The application is out so I reckoned some people would have already started applying (like me  ), anyway, how about I start off with a question: who’s applying for the early action deadline?

Hey! I’m planning to apply regular, just so that my transcript includes my first semester because my school only lets you take AP’s Junior Year :)

You’re allowed to submit your transcript past the early application deadline by emailing the support email address and they’ll amend it to your application. It was recently updated in their FAQ’s: [Frequently Asked Questions](http://launchsummer.org/faq.html)

That’s great, early admission it is!
Btw, are we allowed to submit more than 1 rec letter? I worked for an MIT grad but I really think my JWAC sponsor would write a great rec letter.

It’s just one recommendation. And it’s not a traditional letter, but one where they ask the recommendor to give an assessment of you on a number of entrepreneurial and leadership characteristics.
So in your case, perhaps think of which of those two people could assess you along a number of character trait dimensions better.

Could any participant from this summer (2013) describe their experience at the program? That would be greatly appreciated! Thanks :)

I am applying early admission for the 2014 session. However, I cannot seem to find the description for the powerpoint. I remember having read it beforehand but after navigating all around the webpage, I can’t locate it anymore. Furthermore, the assignment descriptions are usually placed in the submission tab the link for the assignment leads you to; such description is empty. If anyone has any information about such issue, please reply.

I participated in the Launch program last summer, which was the first year of the program, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in challenging themselves beyond the classroom experience. With interests in engineering and biophysics, I was initially curious about entrepreneurship, but now after seeing how it can truly enhance your ability to innovate impactful technologies, entrepreneurship has become one of my passions. Unlike other summer programs, you learn at Launch by doing-- through independent and team-based creative thinking and with emphasis on the importance of networking in any field. In four weeks with a three-person team, you create your own business. With the virtually unlimited resources at MIT and the stellar network of the Launch executive team, students were given amazing opportunities, including meetings with corporate executives of InterContinental Hotels Group, forming partnerships with manufacturers, and having real prototypes from radiation prevention iPhone cases to organic sunscreen, all within four weeks.

The Launch founders and other mentors provided challenging curriculum, professional training and insights, advice and support throughout the program and beyond. Several mentors from Launch now serve on advisory boards for the student start-ups created at Launch last summer. Their experience in the business world and their enthusiasm to make our visions a reality extend the influence of Launch beyond a typical summer experience.

As for the students, Launch gives you the opportunity to bond with the 29 most accomplished students you have probably met so far. Unlike other summer programs, these kids are brilliant but diverse in their interests. We had the student who took 8 APs (before high school), a kid who presented at a national Technology/Education conference in NYC, a programmer for Khan Academy, a dancer, a physicist, a tennis player, a non-profit founder, and much more. When we weren’t making phone calls, writing financial plans, and developing marketing strategies in the Common Room together into the wee hours of the night, we were exploring Boston-- attending Improv, concerts, and of course Red Sox games. The network you will form is invaluable, the friendships are incredible, and the entire experience is definitely unforgettable.

Anyone know how the financial aid is? I’d be ecstatic if I got accepted, the only thing that’s preventing me from applying is the tuition.

Hello, I had a few questions regarding the application:
Regarding the activity description, is there a word limit in effect? Should/can we list any awards/achievements in this location as well?
My recommender asked me if he could submit a letter he had written previously in the additional comments section of the application. Is this allowed? If not, can he use an abbreviated version? He is basically wondering what this section is looking for.
Does getting admitted to MIT help with admissions? My friend was recently accepted Early Action and I’m hoping to encourage him to apply to Launch.

Thank you so much!

catchinginfinity: Financial aid is need based and can be for up to the entire tuition amount

ThinkFlow: activity description has a 100 word limit. The recommendation is just a form and I don’t think the additional comments section has enough space for a previously written letter. Regarding your friend who got into MIT, you should definitely encourage him to apply if he’s interested in entrepreneurship!

Do you guys think that a letter of rec is essential to admission? I am currently in a position where a letter of rec is highly inconvenient but if the rest of my application is good, do you guys think I still have a chance?

@AtomUp
What’s the difference between Endevvr and Launch?

Hi I applied regular decision to the program. After I submitted my application, it says that this action took place. “Initial Review - Early Admissions - Dates B”. Does anyone know what this means. Thanks

@Dilan412 - it means your application is yet to be reviewed, that you submitted in time for the early application round, and that you applied for the second session dates (first session dates would say “Dates A” and applying for both would say “Both Dates”)

Would anyone be able to clarify the instructions for the powerpoint? Does it have to be something related to their example prompt or can it be describing say a trait you may have that would help you be successful at LAUNCH?

When is the due date for the LAUNCH application? Which program is better: Wharton’s LBW or LAUNCH?

I would say Wharton’s program has a lot more prestige and is more established. I have a friend at my school that went there and he said it helped him get into Harvard this year.

Thanks @themajestic :)

@Ready2Rock- That is awesome that it went into early admission. However, I am a bit worried because I know for sure I submitted on January 9, almost a month after the early admission deadline.
