Law enforcement officers and the mortal dangers they face while on duty

"The officer was following a suspect connected to a Saturday night shooting when the suspect stopped before the officer could call for backup. The suspect got out of his car with his hands up, but when the officer began moving to take him into custody, he opened fire at the officer, police said.

Police said the officer returned fire and may have hit the suspect once. The suspect fled and the officer, thinking he’d been shot, pursued until his vehicle broke down because of damage from the gunfire."

Six years ago today, officer Amy Caprio was sadly killed while attempting to stop a teen driver from fleeing a crime scene. This is a local story to me and really affected the community. Four youths had stolen a vehicle and were robbing local residences when police were notified. Unfortunately officer Caprio lost her life that day. The juvenile directly responsible for her death was sentences to life in prison. The others were also given long sentences. Unfortunately none of that can bring officer Caprio back but hopefully it sends a clear message to others that are thinking of committing similar crimes.

I just saw this video for the first time tonight. It’s from a few weeks ago. The officer whose body cam footage you see did an amazing job remaining calm and professional while facing mortal danger.

Law enforcement officers face mortal danger every time they do a traffic stop, every time that they step out of the house in uniform. Yesterday a state trooper died when he had pulled someone over on a highway for the most minor offense, driving without using the seatbelt, and was killed by a truck drifting to the right (bet the driver of the truck was texting while driving). State Trooper Aaron Pelletier killed in line of duty on I-84 – NBC Connecticut

My son’s cruiser has the automatic license plate readers. People would be amazed by the number of unregistered cars on the road. He works from 7pm to 7am, so most of his traffic stops are in the dark.

I’m a landlord in low end housing. You wouldn’t believe how many people are driving without a license, on a permit, on a suspended license. And you know their cars are unregistered.

The stories are so sad. For some reason, this one has me crying over and over again.
