Leadership Launch

Have any of your kids participated in this program before school starts? If so, what did your kids think about this program? It looks like a great way to meet people and learn the university before school starts.

Sorry, we don’t have any experience with this program but my D did participate in marching band and had early move-in. Early move-in means you do everything yourself but the benefit was that everything was very relaxed with no anxiety over parking. It really did help knowing some people before classes started and band was a good way to meet people outside her dorm and her classes so I would guess this would have the same benefits.

Engineering also had a required 3-day, 2-night off-campus orientation with one session that included early move-in but I don’t know if any of the other schools have something similar.

I participated in Leadership Launch in 2013. I honestly thought it was a waste of time. The only positives to the experience for me was that I got to move in early and avoid the Move-In Day crowds. The scheduling of the days was quite horrific, a lot of the activities and presentations were just downright boring, and the whole thing was geared towards minorities. It certainly didn’t live up to what it said it’d be.

My son felt the same. He said some of the instructors even told the kids they didn’t need to come to the sessions if the didn’t want to participate. As a result, he didn’t meet as many people as he hoped. It was too bad because ASU does not offer much of an orientation in terms of meeting other new students so he hoped this would provide that opportunity. He liked moving in early but he found the program was not very useful or informative.

I realize I responded to my own original post. I just wanted to provide feedback to those who might be considering the program next year.
