Lehigh class of 2016!

ACCEPTED!!! I was so happy to get this decision after being wait listed from 3 schools and denied from another in the same day. Congratulations to all of those who were accepted and for those who were wait listed don’t loose hope!

Sorry for the long and somewhat disjoint post in advance!

Decision: Accepted as a Dean’s Scholar and into the Eckardt Scholars Program

Here are my [url=<a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/13597186-post101.html]stats[/url”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/13597186-post101.html]stats[/url] from a previous thread if it would help anyone. Ignore the parts that clearly aren’t related to Lehigh. d:

^Additions to the above:

What major I applied as: I applied as an undecided, biology, and environmental science major
which wasn’t the greatest idea since it probably created more competition for me: Many other Asians list those as their intended major, and colleges, no matter what they say, only have a limited amount of spots for majors. Also, they probably don’t want seeing a stereotypical Asian either, and the biology major really enhanced that image. Btw, my application didn’t even express a strong interest in biology; my ECs were mainly of the humanities type; only in my teacher recommendation did it express my interest.

So I’m just really surprised that they’d accept a stereotypical Asian girl with a stereotypical interest in science when I didn’t really convey my interest for it as well as I should have, when there were probably better candidates than me.

Midyear Report: Oh god, I don’t even want to think about it, lol, but I received As in all my classes except for a B+ in AP Literature and Composition and a C+ in AP Physics: Newtonian Mechanics, and don’t even bring up my attendance. d: My GPA was around a 4.32, and although I included my rank when I applied, I’m not sure if my guidance counselor included my updated (and much lower) rank in the midyear report because our school doesn’t rank, but guidance counselors will tell you your rank if you ask.

I updated my admissions counselor that I received the Discus Award and that “I am the Founder and President of a community service organization I started this year in twelfth grade that creates and sells soda tab bracelets, the profits going to environmental charities. I participate and plan to participate in this activity for an hour fifty weeks a year during the school year and summer break, and I hope to continue my involvement through college” (copied word from word from my email).

My attendance this year and midyear report were absolutely atrocious, with unprecedented absences and tardies, and a C+ in AP Physics: Newtonian Mechanics.

However, my admissions counselor was very understanding, and she responded to all of my emails to her, confirming that she received my email and added the updates to my folder. During the entirety of the college admissions process, Lehigh was honestly the nicest and most understanding out of all the colleges I applied to.

Therefore, I suggest you to email your regional counselor to continue to express your interest or if you have any questions or updates, because it really shows. Despite a horrible first semester, I was surprised and ecstatic that Lehigh would admit me with that many honors. Although colleges may say that they do care about you, and students, there, Lehigh was the only college that really demonstrated their interest. Lehigh actually backs up its words.

Common Application essays:

In hindsight, my Common Application essays were so bad. I’m really surprised that admissions really considered me since my personal statement was very childish and could have given off the impression that I wasn’t ready to grow up and lived in a dream world of cartoons, and my Activity Essay was about a stereotypical Asian activity that other Asians were much better at doing than me. So yeah. I’m surprised.

Lehigh Supplement Essays:

I chose the “challenges” essay, and I basically reused my Columbia book short answer about me defending tiger parenting, albeit with a few major revisions. I overthought it and basically restructured the entire thing the night it was due. I suppose it was decent?, but after rereading it, I noticed 1-2 big grammatical errors
So basically, not my best work.

“Why Lehigh”: Haha, oh my god. This one sucked so much. I’ve honestly never grasped the concept of the “Why [College]?” essays, so I don’t know how to write one at all. I used the concept of “volatility” to explain why I liked Lehigh so much (its flexibility), and from there, I pretty much transitioned into a crappy rant about what I’d like to do there with little details that everyone knows about Lehigh sprinkled in, along with some reminders about myself in there. I kept the “volatile” theme throughout.

If anyone would like to see them, feel free to message me. I know how much reading other people’s supplement essays, especially their “Why [College]?” essays, helped, but I also know how frustrating it is to find them for free online.

Application submission dates: I submitted my Common App on November 14 and the Lehigh supplement on the deadline.

How I expressed my interest: I didn’t have an interview, but I visited Lehigh’s campus and attended the meeting a recruiter held at my school. I only asked one question, a question that could have easily been answered via Google now that I look back, and didn’t have the time to talk to her afterwards, but Lehigh does keep track of your interest. If you live 1-2 hours away from Lehigh, I seriously suggest you take a few hours of your day to visit, or Lehigh will note that you didn’t visit.

Other: I’m very surprised and happy that I was accepted. Lehigh does give you chances, and if you really do show them your interest (email them!), they will look at you seriously.

I really would like to attend, but I’m not sure I can because while I did receive the $10,000 award, I barely received any other financial aid besides that because my family is “high income” (but note that there’s only one income in the house, and I have a little brother). I’m seriously kicking myself in the face right now because I didn’t study hard enough to become a National Merit Finalist (they offer $1,000-$2,000 if you are one), and I took AP Physics when I should’ve taken Honors Physics–I got a C+ in the course, and I think that, along with my poor ACT score, prevented me from having a chance at the Academic Merit Award, which pays half- or full-tuition.

So my advice? Study for your standardized tests, and while you should take classes that are challenging, don’t take classes that are so challenging that you get a C+ in them. d: Honors courses aren’t that bad either.

But overall, this may sound cheesy, but don’t give up hope. No matter what others may say about the admissions officers not caring or overlooking your achievements and what you have to offer–well, colleges that aren’t Lehigh may do that (I kid, I kid)–who knows? They might surprise you. :)

Sorry for talking about myself for too long. I just hope that some of this may help future applicants!

U say to study for ur standardized tests and to do well in challenging classes but these ppl all got waitlisted

I got a 2300 and im 4/438 in my class and I got waitlisted

I am a Lehigh parent and just had my 2nd daughter accepted to Lehigh, and find it interesting to see the highly qualified students who were waitlisted. Both of my daughters are in the 1400/2050 range in SATS, were around 5/300 class rank, 8 aps/college courses with only remaining classes honors. I believe there are several reasons why some didn’t get in. If you have extremely high scores then you better have visited the campus at least once, and written a very good essay (don’t believe what you hear about essays not being important). Lehigh gets a lot of applications from Ivy League applicants who use Lehigh as their safety school, and they know it - they want to know you really want to go to their school. That is why the acceptance rate for Early Decision is extremely high - actually best way to get in if it is your first choice.

I also am sure that my 2nd daughter was accepted also because of legacy. HUGE at Lehigh.

Actually not sure if she is going yet, choosing between Lehigh, UDEL and Villanova. UDEL and Villanova same cost to us, think Lehigh will be cheaper - awaiting Financial Aid.

For those watilisted or denied, I urge you to try not to take it personally or wrack your brain trying to determine why. I went through this with my oldest, he was WL and/or denied at his top 4 schools - he was a top student in every way - he was devastated, we were shocked. What I came to realize is that there is an effort at each school to build a diverse class of students, meaning that they do not just take the top 500 kids out of their applicant pool, they look for a mix of abilities, backgrounds skills etc
It feels random, and maybe it is, but please know that you will end up attending a great school and having a great experience! Most importantly, there is nothing wrong with you!!!

My son ended up a Lehigh and has thrived in all ways - it truly was the perfect place for him.

If you are WL, of course, don’t give up, but make sure you send in a deposit to your first choice of the schools you were accepted at, just in case.

Good luck to all!

Here is the acceptance and WL information from last year:

[Lehigh University Admissions Information - CollegeData College Profile](http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=794)

How many are taken from the WL varies based upon how many students accept their offer of admission each year, last year 14 were taken from the WL of 2914. Also, last year they over admitted and ended up with too many acceptances, so they may have purposely WLed more students this year to protect their “yield”.

Accepted as a Dean Scholar!

I have about a 3.65 in a highly competitive school, but for extra-curriculars, I juggle competitively, play sports, lead music clubs, and am one of the presidents of the tour guide group at my school. I took 5 AP’s throughout high school, and the remainder were either honors, or post-AP courses offered. I visited Lehigh and interviewed with 2 science teachers.

I think when it comes down to it, in these recent years Lehigh is wait listing those that are over qualified when it comes to academics because they can almost always be sure that Lehigh isn’t their first choice. Lehigh is a great school that wants to be sure the students that are accepted are doing it for the right reasons, and it isn’t just wasting spots on students who have little to no interest in the school itself. I made sure to correspond with my counselor when applying as well as visit. Lehigh values these actions highly and wants to see sincerity in the actions. At least that’s my personal opinion. Congratulations to all of the other acceptees. It’s truly an honor to be in this position with all of you.

Dean’s Scholar and Eckardt Scholars Program
I have a 4.1 weighted GPA, 34 composite on the ACT, I am a stage manager for our school’s musicals, and I am the flute section leader in the marching band. Various other clubs and volunteer work as well. I’m also a double legacy, so that didn’t hurt. Congrats to everyone!

Congratulations to everyone!! This is so exciting! I haven’t gotten my letter yet but then again I live in the Midwest so maybe a couple more days. If you received your admissions packet could you post where you live?

@Jenn

I’m from Northern New Jersey. In addition, you can check your decision on the portal! You don’t necessarily have to wait for the letter

@TheBiggestRed

Thanks. I’ve been accepted already, just waiting for the financial aid stuff to come! Last college I’m waiting to hear from.

waitlisted
sat: 2370
gpa:3.9uw 4.49w
Aps: 5 chem 5 us 5 calc bc 5 stat
ecs: nhs, president of business club, president of math club, founded charity that raised 1500, track and field, cross country, president of chess club, mhs etc
school is a top school that sends 10-15 kids to ivies each year
i don’t know how I got waitlisted

Wow, rd, that’s impressive. But hopefully you’ll get some good news at 5:00pm EST today, with your school sending 11-16 kid to ivies.

rd2012 - Your stats are almost identical to my son’s who was accepted in 2010. Were you accepted at lots of other schools? I am wondering if they were afraid to waste an admission on someone who would be going elsewhere. Also, what major werre you applying to and did you visit Lehigh?

i got into berkeley ucla and carnegie mellon, waitlisted by cornell, and rejected by the rest of the ivies. im waiting on harvard and stanford now. this college admissions process sucks

I know, it is discouraging! My son went through the same pain. Lehigh was actually his fifth choice, all the Ivies and Johns Hopkins BME rejected him! He was really stunned and upset. However, I will say that looking back, he ended up in the best place for him, and I am sure that will happen to you too! Whats your first choice of the group?

I have to visit all the places, but at the moment I’m leaning towards ucla because it doesn’t have as much grade deflation as the other two schools. I hope I end up liking the college I go to like your son did; it’s good hearing stories like those because they help me keep my hopes up.

I just got rejected by Wharton, but getting into schools like Lehigh help. I rank my schools accepted in this order:

1a) Lehigh
1b) Binghamton
1c) Union
2) Northeastern
3) Quinnipiac
4) Fordham

Stats:

SAT: 2040

GPA: 3.7 (at a grade-deflating prison)

ACT: 32

Location/Person:

State or Country: Hawaii

School Type: private

Ethnicity: Asian

Gender: female

*Major: undecided

Other Factors: lots of community service, working 2 jobs, soccer and track, choir, photography

ACCEPTED!
I have worked extremely hard in high school and I loved my Lehigh supplements. I did not interview, but I did visit the campus and contact admission officers.
Can’t wait to see some of you <3
Congrats!

Congrats Mari, my son has a female friend at Lehigh from Hawaii!
