Less than 1200 SAT. Where did you end up?

Anybody with less than a 1200 SAT go to a prestigious or at least somewhat respectable college?

State your SAT, GPA, MAJOR, AND COLLEGE.

for some reason, colleges like the two numbers 1200 and 1400

<1200 = VERY LOW PERFORMANCE EXPECTED
1200-1400 = AVERAGE COLLEGE PERFORMANCE EXPECTED
1400> = VERY HIGH SKILLED AND HIGH PERFORMANCE EXPECTED

anyways it depends how low your SAT is…
if its something like 1150, you can make up for it with a high GPA and good ECs…
if its 1100, retake retake retake
good schools like UC Berkeley hardly accept anybody with stats that low…

The national average is 1000. So anything above 1000 is respectable. I got a 1170 and thats very high compared to my friends, many people can’t even get past 1000. Whats the best colleges one can expect with less than 1200 SAT?

as being said if you have below a 1000 its not that big of a problem.

75% of students going into any colleges and universitys will ahve to take remidial classes.

High schools just cant get up to the level of right before college. More like 3 years before.

I got into Mercer with an 1130/1170 (my first sat score from jr yr) and that’s a top 9 master’s cc school in the south…so i guess it’s ok. you can also get into stetson (top 4 in the souther masters’s cc). so, don’t get yourself down. there’s a lot of really good top schools that will accept that score, just maybe not in the top national ranking list, but it goes by different categories…top med, top law, top southern/norther/midwest schools, top master’s, top bachelors’ etc. you just gotta look for it.

An average US student doesnt apply to UC-Berkeley and Harvard…

I dont like these huge so called elite school.

Just go to a local medium school.

be in a class with 8 kids and actually learn the material. be with professors who take the time to learn about you.

That is what I prefer.

You get better grades. becosuie they dont base the grades 100% of tests and Hw and stuff like that. Kinda like HS

i charm the women and get better grades becosue of it. I am horrible in english and writing, but maintain a B+

“…huge elite school.”

Most “elite” schools are private and that mean’s smaller classes. “Local medium school[s]” don’t necessarily mean smaller classes. A good example is the Cal State University system.

And by 1200 do you mean on the old SAT scale or the new one? If it’s on the new one, you’re definitely screwed (no offense) considering that’s half of 2400.

I didnt even know there was a new one.

and big schools like NYU, MIT, priceton and others have huge classes

Well, large freshmen introductory courses; generally they thin out; even at public universities.

still big,

i like having 8 kids or a max of 15.

Its just better.

I dont really know if it even matter what school you go to. Its not like a CC degree is frowned upon. maybe a degree from MIT is good, but once you get a job and have been there for 10 years. It doenst even matter any more.

I dont think its the degree its the person. i dont need a degree from a High end school to get the job i want.

Certainly the person makes the degree, and not the other way around. However, it is up to the individual in terms of selecting an institution. Higher end universities tend to catch the eye and have the reputation factor as well as opportunties.

I dont know about that.

some people that go to these schools are also idiots and just have alot of money.

Employers see this,

as well as graduate school is almost a neccesity now. so why not go to a cheap undergrad and then go to a nice graduate school.

Thats what I plan to do.

I know someone with a 4.0 and an 1100 who got into MIT.

alot of poeple do. Not uncommon

some people just dont do good on standardized tests.

This site gives everyone such a warped sense of where they are a 1200 is very good and is roughly top 20% in the country.

Hey vinnyp77,

Princeton does not have huge classes…They have less than 5,000 undergrads and no professional schools. Princeton is arguably one of the most undergrad focused schools in the Ivy League. The classes sizes there will probably similar to a local community college; definitely smaller then a big state U. like UCLA or UCSD. Albeit they are still bigger then a LAC like Williams or Amherst-the average class size there is approx 15-17-some classes like Williams’ hallmark “tutorials” have class sizes limited to two students and a professor.

Not all the “top” schools have big class sizes.

vinnyp77,
most top 20 colleges have a student faculty ratio of less than 15:1… i used to think like u too; that ill just go to local schools/maybe even community college and then go to good gradschool. but the truth is, even UMich, a somewhat prestigous school, have very low gradschool feeder scores. u think it would be EASY to get into harvard law if u went to some local community college? im not saying u dont stand a chance, but still, u have “less” of a chance given the same capabilities. u have to TRUELY stand out in the applicant pool, do something amazing, have amazing test scores (LSAT and such), stellar GPA, and beyond. its gonna be the whole process of undergrad college application all over again: a crapshot, a luck thing, yes you are qualified and good, but so are lots of others since theres a million regular state schools out there. Let’s say, harvard has a 25% prestigous gradschool feeder rating. So out of that 1500 or so people from your grad, 25% makes it to a good grad school. NOw what do those nubmers tell me? that i have 100X better chance. so if my application looked as good as it would if i were try from a normal school, maybe itll still be a crapshot, but the hole became so large that it wont be as hard. Think of it as trying to shoot a golf ball into a hole the size of a golf ball, or shooting it into a hole the size of lake michigan. im exaggerating, but u get my point.

15:1 is bigger than 8:1

and I garenente many have huge lecture for the big subjects.

and I am in one of those bigger schools now and I am leaving ebcosue I hate not having a real teacher and having 50 kids in a class.
