let's just say yale were to make a mistake...

…and admit a slightly crazy just barely intellegent maryland girl like my friend…princess shell.

would said female suceed at yale?

she tells me that she loves journalism, and the YDN is obviously like no other college paper in the universe, and that she thinks the res colleges are beyond beautiful, and that she thinks yale is the most amazing place on earth, just after papua new guinea and front row center at a shwayze concert. she isn’t the best student in the world, but she’s the type of person who is passionate about everything-learning, writing, research, and facebook. she would like to join the peace corps (no, really!), save the world, and then settle down and be a writer, not the best one, not the worst one, just a happy writer with just enough money to live off the fatta the land, and have a puppy and an apartment with a view.

i know that yale admissions is probably the equivalent of the mafia, and does NOT make mistakes.

but what if they did? just once.

would princess shell even get onto the staff of the YDN? would her average aspirations seem paltry, even stupid to her amazing peers? would princess shell spend her four years feeling marginalized, lonely, inferior- like yale’s only mistake? or is yale really a magical place, where anyone can suceed, where everyone is at least semi-equal, where super amazing geniuses and crazy but awesome average people can coexist-dare i say- in peace? current yalies, what do you think?

teehee, I liked your “friend’s” name…;)

I’m sure "barely intelligent is either false humility, or a genuine, foolish underestimation of your own abilities.

you’ll be fine! stop thinking of yourself as inferior to others, and recognize that you have tons to offer!

Well, you’ve identified the true hurdle – being admitted. Once there, a student feels marginalized to the extent he/she allows it. Frankly, no people are there showing off their GPAs or SATs – everyone is pretty lax. I can’t tell you the board scores of a single one of my fellow students at Yale-- it just never came up.

Now as to your actual chances – if you post your metrics, we can comment on your general viability – but that’s all. Good luck nonetheless.

I can tell from the way you write that you…i mean your “friend”, is a very intelligent, likeable and humorous person. Let Yale see that. If they pass you up then they’re making a mistake…not the other way around.

I’d like to point out that logically theyre making a mistake either way. But Princess Bell I’m in the same boat. Honestly its a crap shoot. good luck hopefully we both get in. :)

kay, i looked at the yale viewbook again and read the posts from you guys and i feel better. sometimes you feel dumb just applying to such a great school, but since the chances of you getting in are so low already, you may as well just apply and worry about fitting in later: statistics say you won’t have to worry about fitting in at all!

haha the yale forum is the bomb. you guys are cool.

princess shell says thanks.
:)

sorry, but ugh. :p

as somebody else mentioned, it’s hard for us to know whether your pessimism is justified without metrics.

shwayze? wazzat

an annoying, syrupy confection of this R&B/hip-hop amalgamation that seems to be dominating the top 40.

although, i am a confessed culture snob. i’ll listen to tom waits and booker little here in my little corner.

okay milessmiles. i’m the indie snob to your culture snob.
i like keane and modest mouse and some way more obscure bands and, well, shwazye.

i won’t lie- his songs are beyond stupid. you can only rephrase “weed” and “women” so many times. but the beats are sweet, and it’s kind of cute, some of the things he says.

have you listened to anything besides the sucky/repetitive “corona and lime” and “buzzin’”? he sort of reminds me of a budding lil’ wayne. which i realize you might knock as well, but again, these guys are great lyricists with horrible themes.

imagine a sort of less awesome shakespeare writing about weed instead of romance.

People make the mistake of thinking that Yale students are ridiculously amazing, world changing superpeople. We’re pretty normal. We just study a lot :-)

I’m sure you’ll be fine. If you don’t have extraordinarily high expectations, it’s not that hard to be a student here. If you do have high expectations for yourself, you have to put in a lot of work.

Another Shwayze and Keane fan over here, princessbell!

Shwayze is the hotness. But more importantly, Weezy is the serious hotness. Dude can write a lyric.

Princes shell is gonna be just fine, i’m pretty sure. She sounds like a real person.

Yale definitely makes mistakes; a girl at my school with a 90 average who did crossword puzzles during every single class got accepted. Of course… she did have uber rich parents… but…

Louis XIV and Silversun Pickups pwn Keane and Modest Mouse. If you’re such an indie snob, get some taste ;)

I immediately pictured Stanley from The Office, haha.

I love Silverspun Pickups, hookem168!

haha emo and classical kids - sweet. All country for me. Steve Earle, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Jason Isbell/Drive by Truckers.

and everyone feels like you do - no one feels like they’re qualified to apply. I always turn red when i tell people I’m applying - like they’re instantly determining my meager chance at admission. But who cares - you have as good a shot as everyone else.

haha i’m more of an afficionado i guess. i’m not the snobby type.
however,
MODEST MOUSE OWNS.
don’t go there with me.
keane i’ll give you the benefit of the doubt, i guess.
and personally i find the silversun pickups depressing. don’t ask why.
and no one here has said anything about being emo, lol…random thought grc.
yeah, i haven’t told anyone but my bff’s i’m applying ea because i don’t want december to roll around and have people asking me if i got in…

I’ve told a few friends and teachers, but now mostlyeveryone in AP classes and around my circle knows. I too get embarrassed, but I feel like people might judge me for applying to such a prestigious school and get the idea that I somehow thnik I’m snobby or better than them.
