<p>Edward’s kids: James Alexander Philip Theo and Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary. Cumbersome, but a bit quaint.</p>
<p>I think Kate is all about pleasing the Queen, so Elizabeth if it’s a girl, or if it’s a boy he’ll be named George after the Queen’s father.</p>
<p>My theory on the shifting due dates (now the speculation is that it’s the 23rd, earlier it was the 13th or the 3rd): William’s loathing for the press is well known. My guess is that the due date has been late July all along. But they put out the rumor about the 3rd so that the press pack could spend the entire month of July broiling on a London sidewalk.</p>
<p>Air con is almost unknown in the UK. I can’t recall any time in the last three years or so when it would have been needed. The public parts of Kensington Palace (where you can see Diana’s dresses) don’t have it. </p>
<p>You all seem to think very common English names are pompous. The Prime Minister’s son is called Arthur for example. None of George, Albert, Charles etc are all that unusual among the average person on the street. My boss is called Charles (and he has a son called Henry).</p>
<p>I really only hope the baby is healthy.</p>
<p>^ gloworm I too hope that the baby (and mom) are fine. But it sure is fun trying to guess boy or girl and names :)</p>

<p>I’ve been totally bored at the idea of naming a boy, but now I’m really excited at the prospect of a future King Moses.</p>

<p>How about, if it’s a boy, we cut right to the chase and name him Rex. If it’s a girl, Regina. Nothing like truth in advertising.</p>
<p>Isn’t the first name the one they’re known by? Prince Charles is Charles Phillip Arthur George. So I bet the first name would be something pretty serious and official with a nod to tradition, but I bet they would choose something more personal for the other names.</p>
<p>If it’s a girl, would they really name her Elizabeth (seeing as Queen Elizabeth is still living)? I could see using Elizabeth as one of her many names, but not as her first name. </p>

Serena Elizabeth Victoria (plus one other name)
Victoria Elizabeth (plus 2 other names)</p>
<p>I think if the baby is a girl, they will go with some combination of Mary/Victoria/Elizabeth and save Diana for baby girl #2… although Diana Mary is a lovely name combination actually, same with Mary Diana. </p>
<p>If a boy I think George will be involved as well as a name associated with Earl Mountbatten, Prince Phillip’s Uncle who was killed in an IRA bombing (featured in the Thatcher movie) and was very close with Prince Charles. Not sure if any of the younger royals have been named for him already however.</p>

<p>Of course, all of this makes me think of the queens in days of old…hoping and praying for the live birth of a male…the king blaming the queen if it was a girl…</p>
<p>And not just the queens in days of old. Normal people had to hope and pray for boys, too, back in the days when property was entailed only through the male line. Remember in Pride and Prejudice, when the property was scheduled to pass to a cousin, when the family had “only” daughters?</p>
<p>England did permit inheritance by females of the royal family in the absence of a boy, unlike France where no queen could rule.</p>
<p>I wonder if the Queen was the only title that could be inherited? Did England allow a Duchess to inherit the dukedom if there were no males in line? Anybody know? I"m just curious.</p>
<p>Hayden I can think of at least one instance. Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick (Warwick the Kingmaker c1450 ish). He gets his title by marrying countess Warwick, who was an only surviving child. Then Warwick himself has only daughters, so his title was supposed to pass to his oldest grandson (but this didn’t work out since Henry VII decided to behead the grandson after keeping him in his dungeon for a decade). I am sure there are more. Powerful people change the rules to suit themselves.</p>

<p>There was some special deal for Mountbatten himself. He had no sons, so his eldest daughter inherited his title.</p>
