how about a name that honors no one. just a name both parents like…or is that forbidden

^Interestingly, I’m with geeps on this one!

Not really into this at all, but just now reading some latter comments and one thing is puzzling me–the idea that George is an uncommon or archaic name. I know many Georges. It never sounded uncool to me growing up; maybe there are more in NJ? (though my cousin’s H in PA is George.)

Oooooh, that would be a great modern royal name: Bluetooth - he’s really connected :D

Catherine wears Diana’s engagement ring. William adores his mother and even spoke of her when they announced the engagement. There’s no way to erase her memory from their lives. Spencer is a no-go because of the poor relationship with Diana’s brother. I don’t know that they will use Francis, however I think William and Catherine will try to honor their families. I doubt the Queen would reject Francis. She wasn’t very gracious after Diana passed and I really don’t think she wants to tell her grandson his mothers middle name/Catherine’s fathers name is unacceptable. At a time her approval rating is finally up that would really be poor form.

Well, we don’t know what transpires behind royal doors.

re: Bluetooth: [Harald] “was famous for uniting Scandinavia just as we intended to unite the PC and cellular industries with a short-range wireless link.”

So glad that my grandma didn’t get to name my kids. lol

Saw Patrick Jephson, former press secretary to Diana, on GMA a bit ago and he seems to think The Queen will be apprised of the name before the public, but won’t have approval. That seems consistent with how things are changing with the royals. Some may remember that when HM’s staff came up with the first guest list for W&K’s wedding, William had a heart to heart with his grandmother about there being no room for their friends and she told him to toss the list and start over.

I saw an interesting speculation on Twitter as to the possibility of long shot name Alexander, at least as a middle name. Since one of HM’s middle names is Alexandra, it would be a nice tribute to The Queen. I like that idea, as well as the use of Frances/Francis as another middle name. George Arthur Francis Alexander would recognize Charles who has Arthur as a middle name and William for the same reason.

After reading the other thread, I want to say how much I have enjoyed how this one has stayed fun and good natured!

How about: Roy Al Diss Spencer?

Do you think it makes a difference that the current Catholic pope is Francis? Given the issues in UK between Protestants and Catholics over the centuries, I would doubt that Francis will be used - but, of course, you never know.

megmom–are you aware that part of the change to the succession rules is that a Catholic is no longer barred from succession? It might be a hugh symbolic step to have Francis as one of the names.

I think they will go with a name that would be original…like Oliver

David would be a possibility if it hadn’t been the family name for The Abdicator. I would think that they would want to name the baby something that doesn’t sound dweebish to the modern ear, so I doubt that Albert would make it, except as a middle name. There is also Albert of Monaco… They could reach back to Alfred, but Alf is sort of a cliche working class nickname in the UK, so I doubt it.

Frederick would harken back to the Elector Palatine to whom Elizabeth the daughter of Charles I was married, whose daughter Sophie married into the Hanovers, which is where their claim to the throne comes from.

I think I’m betting on James. It would have a certain reuniting effect on the religious and Scots/English front. After all, the Charleses were Stuarts, and Bonnie Prince Charlie, aka the Young Pretender, was the son of James, aka the Old Pretender.

Arthur tends to be an ill-fated name. Think of Henry VIII’s older brother.

If they want to give a nod to their non-royal families, Francis is a good bet as one of the middle names, since William was reportedly close to his grandmother Frances. Phillip also includes both families.

I think you can safely say that Oliver is off the table. :D

Albert! Let’s do it!

Actually, I’m going with Rupert. I have long had an historical crush on Rupert of the Rhine.

I have had my historical crush on Richard I. So I am going with

Richard Arthur William Francis

Or

Richard Arthur Philip Francis

Philip for the grandfather and the maternal aunt who I would imagine would be one of the Godparents.

The royal family naming an heir Oliver would the equivalent of a prominent political family in the US naming their first son Benedict. Not going to happen.

re: unusual. Huffington has a link that disses Carrion, Har**** and Rambo, among the least popular baby names released on whatever govt list it is. At least five kids got those.

so I suppose you can guess what the asterisks replace.

Alexander…

Wow, Consolation, you are really into the history of the British monarchy! I would not think of Henry VIII’s brother when I heard Arthur, I would think - I’m Arthur, King of the Britons! My British knowledge comes from Monty Python.
