I’ve taken to buying a few new roses every year and seeing how they do. If they’re not wonderful (and I live in the City of Roses), out they go. It’s an indulgence, but a minor one in the scheme of things. I plant them in large pots in composted dog waste. (That’s a whole 'nother story.)

I have david austen lavender roses in my front yard…light send…blooms many times. In our old house I planted lots of roses…but we don’t have a lot of land here. (I do have a solid wall of iceberg roses. But the lavender…omg beautiful

For sweet fragrance and repeat blooming throughout the summer my favorite is an oldie, Zephirine Drouhin, a climbing heirloom Bourbon. Fairly disease and neglect resistant too, I have a couple of bushes that I planted 17 years ago and have neglected but they’re still doing all right.

For those who live in Silicon Valley, check out the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden. It’s in a quiet neighborhood near the Rosicrucian Museum. I took my mom there last fall, and was amazed by the variety and beauty of the roses in the huge garden. We couldn’t even see them all, there were so many. And this was just before Halloween-- we have a long season for roses here.

Yes, I have had japanese beetles eat my rose bushes down to twigs. Heartbreaking. I have tried all the different insecticides and they will kill what is on the bushes at that time. But they come back. I have heard that the only real solution is to plant garlic under and around the rose bushes. When they sprout the odor apparently keeps the beetles away. Might try this but I keep thinking who wants to wander into a rose garden and smell the aroma of garlic!

shrink…what do you love about those ones? I am unfamiliar with them.

I wonder if Society Garlic would have enough scent to do the same? I have had japanese beetles destroy everything. I put Seven on and as soon as it rains, the Seven is gone. Even the systemics dont seem to work.
