Letterman to retire 2015

I will miss him a great deal, but I normally just record his show. We are a Daily Show/Colbert family with Craig Ferguson for an occasional laugh. Jimmy Fallon is sweet and fun as well. I really wanted to love Arsenio Hall ( as I did back in the day) but find him boring now.
I think the late night talk show is still an old person’s game and would the to see someone edgy get in and fail. Better to move someone up and put Chelsea Handler on in the later spots. She had the freedom to be offensive on E and she wouldn’t be able to be as blue on CBS.

Who stays up that late anymore? I’m too old, that’s for sure.

I do not watch any talk shows. Boring to me. But everything on TV is boring, even news are not news most of the time. By the time I get to TV, heard most of them, nothing new, or on antoher hand most of it is lie, including his show.

My husband & I saw a live taping of his show in NYC @4 or 5 years ago. I have to admit, that was pretty fun! The show is taped at 5pm. His guest that night was Sharon Osbourne B-) We even went around the corner to the “Hello Deli” which made that convenience store owner rich & famous. But Dave clearly has hung on too long…I think he was in his prime and was funny for years. Not so much lately, he seems tired! Maybe that’s because he’s 67 with a 10 year old! :open_mouth: Time for him to move on, I guess.

MiamiDAP- you have established that you like almost nothing except swimming (floating) and donuts.

I can’t stay up that late- even on Central time, but he certainly was an icon!

Agree with MOWC. On all counts!

Maybe we should start a thread about favorite donuts to get a positive post from Miami…at least we think she likes donuts!

I’m in the camp that has always found Letterman unpleasantly cocky and mean. I’m not a big talk show fan in general, but I liked Conan and Leno.

We used to live right down the road from Letterman in CT and would often see him out running. Not that that means anything one way or the other! :)

I thought he was funny back in the late 80s…I think he has become pretty abrasive and arrogant

He’s been pretty good these past few nights. Love him!

Stephen Colbert is replacing him.

Kind of a surprising, choice, imo. I see this move as going after a younger demographic. I’ve always enjoyed Colbert, but this role will be very different from his usual comedy routine, I would suspect. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

I wonder if he will do the show as his “colbert” persona or as himself?

^^ According to early reports (and we all know how infallible THOSE are) - he will be himself, not his “Colbert Report” persona.

I’m going to miss his Comedy Central show.

And in related news - Rush Limbaugh is not happy with CBS’s choice of a replacement: “CBS has just declared war on the heartland of America…”

<a href=“Rush Limbaugh Freaks Out About Stephen Colbert Getting 'Late Show' | HuffPost Latest News”>HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost;

So I guess Colbert won’t be running for president, since he wouldn’t be able to have that air time… ;)

I like his wit and banter. He will be an improvement.

I am going to really miss The Colbert Report. :frowning:

Wow… I actually got this right. I called a Colbert (or Stewart) replacement in the second post of this thread!

No more Colbert Report?
That is incredibly sad.

What is the over under for folks fully understanding/knowing Colbert is playing a character?
Do you think Sam Bee will get his spot?

Should we guess who will be there for Letterman’s final week?
Will itl be Regis, Stern, Bill Murray, Foo Fighters, maybe a surprise appearance by Springsteen and hopefully stuff dropped off a five-story building.
I hope he does a will it float

I think Bill Murray is a safe bet, as is Stern, Steve Martin, and some A+ list celebs, musicians, and comedians. Would love to see Merill Markoe (doubtful), Chris Elliot under the seats., and Larry “Bud” Melman from the great beyond.

Will be emotional to see him go, he truly changed the sensibility of late night and comedy in general. Hopefully he won’t become a hermit like Carson did after his retirement.
