Life in Retirement - We've made it! Now what? (No investment discussions permitted)

Well, I was able to change the Yosemite trip to a single (only out the $100 husband deposit). Now I’m getting excited to be going on a solo adventure, albeit in a group. Only downside is having to fly in and out of SFO . Upside is having a room to myself but plenty of socializing potential.

Sounds great. We will definitely want a trip report on your adventure.

Enjoy the trip!! Yosemite is amazing and it looks like you’ll hit all the great spots on the tour. A few years ago, I went on a yoga retreat to Panama. I went because my younger D (who is an actor) got an acting gig and couldn’t take the trip but had paid for it (non-refundable). I was really hesitant to go by myself, but once I got there, I had a great time and met some women who are still friends.

SFO is really OK. We fly in and out of it at least annually. We’ve never had many issues there and they have nice places to grab a bit and/or eat, plus lounges. Enjoy Yosemite—it’s a lovely place!

I retired at age 61 from 40 years in education. Wife still works twice a week for her family’s business. Starting in 2017 we were taking one big trip per year. Then due to COVID we went no where in 2020 and 2021. At the time we realized that two years of good health were totally wasted because we could not travel. Couple this with having several friends and family members die far far too young.

As a result, we now take minimum 2 big trips per year. There will come a time when health will stop us from traveling. We will keep traveling when we want until we cannot anymore.

You just never know how much time you have left, do you?

We went to look for new LR furniture this weekend. I wasn’t sure I wanted to spend the money but today I decided…you can’t take it with you…and it’s time.

This week, I hope to order a new couch, side chair and ottoman, coffee table, side table, and a rug.

I just have to decide….which ones. There were two different ones I liked. One couch was leather, and the other cloth. Maybe I should start a living room furniture thread!

No leather if you have a cat!

I started another thread to discuss this!

We’ve been thinking along the same lines. Taking various nice vacations now, in our “Go-Go” years.

We lost 2 of our go go years to COVID and are in our late gogo years, approaching our go slow years at some point.

Wishing you and yours good health! We are OK, keeping our fingers crossed

My go-go years are busy cuddling grandchildren, and I really, really don’t want to fly anywhere. It’s the car, train, or just stay home for me! (added benefit, low cost lifestyle.). I think I am just ready to be a homebody!

I think you’re going to have a fabulous time! You are an outgoing, lovely person and, remember, you arranged our meetup in San Diego! Our county is huge, so it can be difficult getting together, but I had a good time meeting you and all of the ladies. Because you put yourself out there, I think you’ll have lots of good company.
(I wish I could come meet you now, but my surgery on Dec. 30th has set me back for at least two months!)
We want updates of your trip!

I am so happy that you decided to go on this trip by yourself! It’s a big step and you deserve to do the things you want!

I’m sure we will see lots and lots of your pictures!

I was thinking about what the “go-go” years mean. I think it means doing whatever you want to while you are physically able. It does not have to mean going far away. Not everybody has a big travel bucket list. Go-go could mean enjoying a hobby (gardening), a sport (golf), culture (museums, concerts, etc.), your grandkids and adult children (baby sitting, spending time together), etc.

I so agree with this. I like to “go go “ but it’s not via :airplane: or long :oncoming_automobile: trips! My activity list is more grounded with my home as my base. And that largely is enough for me.

Like @abasket, I really enjoy gardening and growing plants. If in retirement we don’t move to a place where it is possible year round, I will definitely get a winterized greenhouse, preferably with a hydroponic or aeroponic setup.

Road Scholar has been around 50 years, but under another name. I will be on a Road Scholar trip with our local OLLI group through a university continuing ed that is also offered through many universities (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, OLLI). They also do organize ‘single’ group travel for some of their Road Scholar trips, and even grandparent trips.

Our local OLLI group has been around for 30 years and with very dedicated volunteers (University has a few paid staff for the program) - they offer classes of interest and other events, and the people involved are interesting.

Here is a brief video of this program.

Our go-go years aren’t seeing much in the way of travel, but we do “go.” Yesterday, we went to the farm/park near us with GD. There was snow (a couple inches) and cold (wind chill was in the single digits), but GD loves being outside in that weather. I was cold, but we had a blast playing on the playground equipment, making snow angels & petting the animals who came out of their warm barns to see who would come out in such weather. I’m so glad that we are healthy enough to run around in the freezing cold with a four year old! Go-go means a lot of different things, but overall, it means being able to engage in life.

Where do you get the clothes to sell?? Do you go to estate sales and resell?
